Why We Love it
–Universal Genève occupies a special place in the history of watchmaking, celebrated for everything from groundbreaking chronographs to some of the most elegant dress watches of the twentieth century. Yet among the manufacture's most charming creations are its jewelry watches—objects that blur the line between timekeeping instrument and wearable sculpture.
Offered here is a remarkable yellow-gold brooch watch dating to the mid-century period, showcasing Universal Genève's flair for both design and craftsmanship. Executed in warm yellow gold, the piece centers on a diminutive manually wound watch integrated into a sculptural bow motif. The highly stylized ribbon form reflects the optimism and glamour of postwar jewelry design, with sweeping, architectural folds that transform a familiar decorative element into something distinctly modern.
Most fascinating is the orientation of the watch itself. Rather than facing outward in a traditional manner, the dial appears to be suspended upside down above the bow, allowing the wearer to read the time with a simple downward glance. Pinned to a lapel, dress, or jacket, the watch would have been perfectly positioned for discrete time keeping—a thoughtful detail that transforms this decorative jewel into a genuinely practical accessory.
The silvered dial is signed Universal Genève and accented by applied indices and elegant dauphine hands, while the compact case provides a subtle counterpoint to the bold sculptural form below. Whether worn as originally intended or appreciated as a collectible object, it represents an era when Swiss watchmakers routinely collaborated with the world of fine jewelry to create imaginative expressions of personal style.
Today, examples such as this are increasingly appreciated by collectors who recognize that Universal Genève's legacy extends far beyond the Polerouter and Compax. Rarely encountered and undeniably distinctive, this brooch watch offers a fascinating glimpse into a more playful, artistic, and inventive chapter of the brand's history.
Brand Story

Brand Story
+A pivotal moment came in 1897 when Louis Eduoard Berthoud, a gifted designer of complicated movements, joined the company. Under his technical leadership, Universal Genève became one of the foremost innovators in chronograph development during the 20th century. The brand's celebrated Compur and Compax chronographs earned a devoted following among aviators, military personnel, and collectors, while the Royal Family of the Netherlands granted Universal Genève a royal charter to supply chronographs to the Dutch military.
Beyond its technical achievements, Universal Genève developed a reputation for creating some of the most elegant and influential watches of the mid-century era. From the purpose-built Polerouter—designed by a young Gérald Genta—to refined dress watches such as the Cabriolet and Golden Shadow, the brand combined mechanical innovation with a distinctive sense of style that continues to resonate with collectors today.
Following decades of dormancy, Universal Genève was officially relaunched in 2026 under the stewardship of Georges Kern and the House of Brands Group. The revival marks the return of one of Swiss watchmaking's most revered names, a manufacture whose historic contributions to chronographs, micro-rotor movements, and modern watch design have secured its place among the great maisons of horological history. Vintage Universal Genève watches remain highly sought after, celebrated by collectors, historians, and enthusiasts for their enduring craftsmanship, innovation, and timeless appeal.
