Audemars Piguet Millenary 'Frosted Gold' Philosophique

There is something wonderfully contrarian about a complicated mechanical watch that deliberately refuses to tell you the exact time.

Introduced in 2019, the Audemars Piguet Millenary Frosted Gold Philosophique revisits an idea AP first explored in 1982: a watch designed to loosen our obsession with minutes and seconds. Inspired by single-hand timepieces dating back centuries, the Philosophique does away with both entirely. One hand indicates the approximate hour, making it beside the point whether it’s 3:12 or 3:17. For a manufacture capable of extraordinary precision, that feels almost rebellious.

The unusual display is perfectly suited to the Millenary’s distinctive architecture. Its 39.5mm x 35.4mm oval case is rendered in 18K pink gold and treated with AP’s dramatic Frosted Gold finish, created by repeatedly striking the surface with a diamond-tipped tool to produce thousands of tiny facets. Rather than relying on gemstones, the textured surface catches and scatters light, giving the gold an almost crystalline appearance.

That texture continues on the hammered brown dial, where the dark, irregular surface provides a rich contrast against slender pink-gold hour markers. The lone pink-gold hand appears deceptively simple, but its journey around the dial is anything but. Because the Millenary is elliptical rather than round, Audemars Piguet developed a patented mechanism that alters the hand’s speed and trajectory as it travels around the oval display.

Powering everything is the automatic Calibre 3140, an in-house movement offering approximately 50 hours of power reserve. Visible through the sapphire exhibition caseback, it provides a mechanical counterpoint to the deliberate simplicity on the front.

This example is paired with a brown square-scale alligator leather strap and an 18K pink-gold pin buckle, and comes as a complete set with its inner and outer boxes, warranty card, papers, and pamphlets.

The Philosophique is a rather clever contradiction: considerable mechanical ingenuity devoted to telling you less. In a world increasingly obsessed with measuring every second, there’s something luxurious about a watch that suggests the hour is close enough.

Audemars Piguet, the vaunted manufacture from Les Brassus, wasn't doing so well at the end of the 1960s. Their horological prowess aside, times were changing, customer tastes were evolving, and AP was stuck firmly in a very traditional past. Fortunately for us, their executives recognized this, and bet it all on the launch of an avant-garde timepiece the likes of which the world had never seen.

Utilizing the talents of a designer named Gerald Genta, who would make his name designing this very watch, AP planned from the beginning to make this new watch - dubbed the Royal Oak - a contradiction to tradition, and it became the world's first luxury sports watch. Made in steel. The gamble paid off, and the watch world clamored to get their hands on the cutting-edge design, which featured a sharply angled watch with an integrated bracelet, a tapisserie dial, and an ultra-thin movement.

We generally ship our products via FedEx, fully insured, within 5 business days of purchase. An adult signature is required for receipt of all packages for insurance purposes. Expedited shipping is available at an additional cost. We are also happy to hand deliver your purchase in Manhattan or you may pick it up at our showroom.

Returns must be sent overnight or by priority international delivery, fully insured and paid for by the customer. A restocking fee may apply. Watches must be returned in the same condition as initially shipped.
