Why We Love it

Why We Love it
–Few watches have done more to define the modern dress watch than the Patek Philippe Calatrava.
Introduced in 1932 with the Reference 96, the collection established a design language built around proportion, restraint, and the idea that very little is required when every detail is right. The Reference 5119, introduced in 2006, brought one of the most recognizable Calatrava designs into the modern era. Its direct ancestor was the Reference 3919, distinguished by its hobnail Clous de Paris bezel, slender lugs, Roman numerals, and subsidiary seconds. The 5119 retained those signatures while increasing the case from 33mm to a more contemporary 36mm.
This Reference 5119R-001 is rendered in 18K rose gold, with a polished case that contrasts beautifully with the sharply textured hobnail bezel. The bright white dial features elongated black Roman numerals, slender black hands, and a small-seconds register at 6 o’clock, while the delicate, almost wire-like lugs keep the larger case visually light. Inside is the manually wound Calibre 215 PS, a compact, beautifully finished movement that helps maintain the Calatrava’s elegantly slim profile.
Fitted to a black alligator leather strap with a signed 18K rose gold Patek Philippe buckle, the 5119R is a particularly pure expression of the Calatrava formula. It didn’t attempt to reinvent the 3919; it simply gave one of Patek Philippe’s most enduring designs a little more room to breathe. Sometimes evolution is simply a matter of getting the proportions right.

Brand Story
+Owning a Patek Philippe is, for many, the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepiece they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.
Of course, for a brand that is steeped in heritage, we are told ‘You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”
Well, you know the rest.
