Why We Love it
–At first glance, something seems slightly off about the Breitling Cosmonaute. Look closer and there it is: the hour hand travels around the dial only once every 24 hours. Strange on Earth, perhaps. In orbit, it made perfect sense.
The Cosmonaute grew out of the early years of American spaceflight, when Mercury Seven astronaut Malcolm Scott Carpenter approached Breitling about adapting its already famous Navitimer for an environment in which the conventional rhythms of day and night no longer applied. Carpenter ultimately wore a specially prepared version during the Aurora 7 mission in May 1962, forever connecting the Cosmonaute with one of watchmaking’s great adventures.
The Ref. 809 that followed is essentially a Navitimer from an alternate universe. The familiar circular slide rule remains, as do the three contrasting chronograph registers, but the black dial is reorganized around a full 24-hour scale. The effect is gloriously busy and technical, especially on this example, where decades of aging have softened the luminous Arabic numerals and markers to a warm tone against the black dial. A gilt “Cosmonaute” signature and Breitling’s twin-plane emblem provide two particularly charming period details.
At 41mm, the stainless steel case was enormous by 1960s standards and still has plenty of presence today. Beneath the Plexiglass crystal sits the manually wound Venus 178, the column-wheel chronograph caliber that powered some of Breitling’s most desirable watches of the era.
What makes the Cosmonaute so compelling today is that none of its eccentricity was arbitrary. The unusual display, the enormous amount of information on the dial, even its imposing dimensions were all tied to the idea of a professional instrument.
This example captures that original character beautifully. It’s complicated, wonderfully aged, slightly odd, and unmistakably Breitling. More importantly, it comes from that brief, extraordinary period when watchmakers had to start thinking about what a wristwatch should do once its wearer left Earth (!)
Brand Story

Brand Story
+The company first started manufacturing wrist chronographs as early as the 1930s. In 1936, they became an official supplier to military forces of the United Kingdom and Canada. While perhaps best known for the Navitimer and Chronomat lines — which were used heavily by pilots of many nations — Breitling also produced scores of other chronograph models that merit consideration, such as the more affordable Top Time and Premier. Dive watches, such as the Super Ocean, are also part of the company’s offerings.
The late 1970s was a turbulent time for the Swiss watch industry, and many storied houses were swept away by the Quartz Crisis. By 1978, Breitling was in trouble due to the illness of its leader, Willy Breitling, and the steep decline in sales that had cut through the entire industry. Unable to keep operations going, the company was liquidated, and parts, tooling, and naming rights were sold off.
Between 1979 and 2017, Breitling continued under the ownership of the Schneider family. In 2017, an 80% stake in the firm was sold to a British private equity firm, with the remaining 20% sold in 2018. In 2019, the company released the caliber B01, an in-house, automatic chronograph movement that’s since found its way into the Chronomat and Navitimer collections, bringing the tale of this famed manufacturer full circle.
