Few watches capture Patek Philippe’s particular brand of elegant eccentricity quite like the Golden Ellipse.

Introduced in 1968, the Golden Ellipse broke decisively with the traditional round dress watch, its distinctive form occupying the space somewhere between a circle and a rectangle. Patek famously connected its proportions to the “golden ratio,” the mathematical equation long associated with harmonious design. The result became one of the manufacture’s defining shapes of the late 20th century, and a particularly compelling canvas for the smaller, jewelry-minded watches of the era.

This 90s-era yellow gold Reference 4830J takes the idea somewhere especially chic. Measuring a wonderfully compact 26mm by 23mm, its softly rounded case frames a crisp white dial with oversized black Roman numerals and matching black hands. But the real action happens beyond the case. Fabulous sculptural “chain-link” lugs extend dramatically above and below, giving the diminutive watch considerably more presence on the wrist while blurring the distinction between watchmaking and jewelry design.

The theme continues with the original Patek Philippe black alligator leather strap and remarkable signed yellow gold pin buckle, whose curving, open construction echoes the shape of the lugs. An additional brown alligator leather strap is included, offering an easy way to change the character of the watch.

Inside is a Patek Philippe quartz movement, a fitting choice for the slender, design-driven watches the manufacture produced during this period. Better still, the caseback retains its original quartz sticker, a wonderfully nerdy detail and increasingly uncommon survivor that speaks to the watch’s preservation.

We generally ship our products via FedEx, fully insured, within 5 business days of purchase. An adult signature is required for receipt of all packages for insurance purposes. Expedited shipping is available at an additional cost. We are also happy to hand deliver your purchase in Manhattan or you may pick it up at our showroom.

Returns must be sent overnight or by priority international delivery, fully insured and paid for by the customer. A restocking fee may apply. Watches must be returned in the same condition as initially shipped.
