Why We Love it

There are few watches that can legitimately be described as foundational to modern wristwatch design. The Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 96 is one of them. Introduced in 1932, the reference established a design language so successful that it continues to influence dress watches nearly a century later. Just as the Cartier Tank defined the rectangular wristwatch, the Ref. 96 defined the round one, setting the benchmark for proportion, restraint, and elegance against which countless watches would be measured.

The Ref. 96 was also among the earliest and most important creations produced under the Stern family's stewardship, whose acquisition of Patek Philippe helped redirect the manufacture's focus toward wristwatches at a pivotal moment in horological history. In many respects, the reference laid the foundation for what we now recognize as the Calatrava—not merely as a Patek Philippe collection, but as an entire category of watch design.

This example, preserved in 18K yellow gold, dates to March 10, 1959, as confirmed by its accompanying Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives. Measuring 30.5mm in diameter with an elegant 39mm lug-to-lug span, it demonstrates the impeccable proportions that have made the Ref. 96 so enduringly desirable.

The dial is particularly captivating. Against a deep black backdrop, faceted dauphine hour markers catch the light beautifully, creating a striking contrast that elevates the watch beyond pure minimalism. The gilt Patek Philippe Genève signature possesses a remarkable warmth and intensity, seemingly glowing from within the dial itself. A recessed small-seconds register at six o'clock provides visual balance while reinforcing the reference's classic mid-century character.

Powering the watch is Patek Philippe's manually wound Calibre 12-400, a movement celebrated for its reliability, refinement, and elegant construction. Like the watch itself, it embodies the manufacture's philosophy that true sophistication lies not in excess, but in flawless execution.

For many collectors, the Ref. 96 remains the purest expression of the Calatrava ideal. Simple without being plain, elegant without being fragile, and historically important without sacrificing wearability, it stands among the most significant wristwatches ever produced. More than ninety years after its introduction, the Ref. 96 remains not merely a great Patek Philippe, but one of the defining wristwatches of the modern era.

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.
