Why We Love it

Some complications are impressive primarily because they are complicated. Patek Philippe’s Annual Calendar is different: it is genuinely useful.

Introduced in 2010, the Reference 5205G brought a distinctly modern attitude to a complication Patek Philippe pioneered for the wrist in 1996. This white gold Reference 5205G-010 pairs that mechanical ingenuity with one of the most distinctive dial layouts in the modern Patek catalog.

Measuring 40.2mm, the 18K white gold case is defined by its unusual skeletonized lugs, which visually separate the case from the strap and give the watch a lighter, more architectural profile. The two-tone slate grey is equally striking, with applied white gold markers and three beautifully integrated calendar apertures sweeping across its upper half. Day appears at 10:00, date at 12:00, and month at 2:00—a wonderfully intuitive arrangement that can be read almost instantaneously.

At 6:00, Patek combines the moon-phase display with a 24-hour indication, adding considerable information without disrupting the dial’s symmetry.

Inside is the automatic Calibre 324 S QA LU 24H/206, offering approximately 35 to 45 hours of power reserve. As an annual calendar, the mechanism automatically accounts for months containing 30 or 31 days, requiring manual correction only once each year at the end of February. It’s a wonderful complication put to remarkably practical use.

This example is fitted to a signed grey Saffiano leather strap with an 18K white gold Patek Philippe pin buckle. The tonal combination of grey dial, white gold, and textured grey leather gives the watch a particularly contemporary character.

Better still, it comes as an exceptional set, accompanied by its inner and outer boxes, Certificate of Origin, papers and pamphlets, original hangtags, and setting tool.

Discontinued in 2018, the 5205G-010 represents an especially compelling period of modern Patek Philippe: mechanically sophisticated, slightly unconventional, and exceptionally elegant. Those three calendar apertures alone make it one of the great modern Patek dials.

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.

Of course for a brand that is steeped in heritage, we are told “You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”

Well, you know the rest.
