Why We Love it

Why We Love it
–The Hermès Slim d’Hermès GMT for Hodinkee is one of those collaborations that feels almost inevitable in hindsight—two voices with a shared love of design purity, typography, and quiet cleverness. Yet when you see the watch in person, it still surprises you. It’s slender, almost impossibly so for a dual-time complication, and it carries the kind of intellectual charm that only Hermès seems to muster: playful, refined, and deeply considered. Everything begins with those idiosyncratic numerals by French designer Philippe Apeloig, the graphic backbone of the Slim line.
The GMT execution is where the magic really happens. Rather than shouting its functionality, the watch whispers it through an asymmetrical sub-dial at ten o’clock—an Agenhor-engineered module that delivers a second time zone with a wonderfully poetic sense of order. The home-time scale, with its subtle day-night indicator, has a kind of cosmopolitan elegance, the sort that belongs to people who change cities as easily as they change jackets. It’s travel made lyrical, filtered through Hermès’ natural ability to make technical solutions feel effortless.
Then there’s the case: palladium, a precious metal from the platinum family that gives off a cooler, more subdued sheen. At 39.5mm, the proportions strike that sweet spot between presence and restraint, while the ultra-thin H1950 movement keeps the entire profile deliciously sleek. Hermès didn’t just chase thinness for bragging rights—there’s a lightness to the way this watch wears, a balance that supports its role as a companion rather than a trophy—a limited edition of only 24 pieces.
The strap, naturally, is where the maison flexes quietly. The Bleu Abyss alligator feels as luxurious as anything coming out of the Paris ateliers, and the color anchors the whole composition. There’s a completeness to this watch—dial, case, typeface, complication, strap—that feels almost architectural. Every element seems pulled taut, reduced, intentional.
Why do we like it? Because it’s a reminder that travel watches don’t need to be bulky, technical brutes or overwrought statement pieces. This one carries the spirit of movement—between time zones, between ideas, between aesthetics—with grace and wit. It’s a GMT for people who appreciate design as much as mechanics, and for collectors who see beauty not just in precision, but also in personality. It’s Hermès proving, once again, that quiet confidence can often be the boldest move of all.
Brand Story
+
Brand Story
+The maison began a furious push to vertically integrate in 2006, purchasing a 25% stake in movement maker Vaucher; this was followed by the purchase in 2012 of a dial manufacturer and a case maker in 2013. The results have been some of the most stunning timepieces of the past decade, including the gorgeous Slim d’Hermès with its unique, cut-out typeface, and the Arceau L’Heure De La Lune moonphase. From entry-level dress watches such as the Galop d’Hermès — designed by American industrial designer Ini Archibong — to GPHG-winning creations such as the Arceau Robe du Soir, the maison has more than proven its horological savoir faire.
