Why We Love it

There are few names in vintage watch collecting that carry the weight of Universal Genève. Long before the modern fascination with luxury sports watches, the Geneva manufacture established itself as one of Switzerland's premier chronograph specialists, producing elegant, technically sophisticated timepieces that remain highly coveted today. The Compax family stands among the brand's greatest achievements and helped define the modern chronograph as we know it.

Offered here is a handsome Universal Genève Compax Ref. 52215, presented in a 33mm 14K yellow-gold case and paired with a striking period 'stretch' brick-link bracelet. Elegant without feeling delicate, the watch exemplifies Universal Genève's ability to blend sporting functionality with refined design. The silver dial features a classic compax layout with running seconds at 9 o'clock, a 30-minute chronograph register at 3, and a 12-hour totalizer at 6. Printed 'Arabic' numerals, slender 'feuille' hands, and a tachymeter scale complete a dial that is both highly legible and wonderfully balanced.

The accompanying bracelet deserves special mention. The beautifully articulated brick-link construction drapes comfortably on the wrist and is fitted with an uncommon open-end sliding clasp, a thoughtful period detail that speaks to the quality of the watch's original presentation. Together, the bracelet and case create a cohesive mid-century aesthetic that feels every bit as compelling today as it did decades ago.

Turning the watch over reveals a deeply personal engraving: "To M.S. Palmet From Junior Essex Troop." More than a simple presentation inscription, the engraving connects the watch to a fascinating chapter of New Jersey history. Founded in 1931, the Junior Essex Troop (JET) was a military-style youth auxiliary organization affiliated with the famed Essex Troop of Cavalry, one of the most storied mounted units in the New Jersey National Guard. For generations, the organization provided young riders with instruction in horsemanship, discipline, and equestrian competition, becoming one of the state's premier youth riding programs. The inscription suggests this Compax was awarded to commemorate a significant achievement or milestone, preserving a tangible link to that tradition. Such provenance transforms the watch from a beautiful vintage chronograph into a piece of personal and regional history, carrying a story that extends far beyond the walls of Universal Genève's Geneva-based manufacture.

Today, vintage Compax models remain among the cornerstones of serious Universal Genève collecting. With the historic manufacture relaunched in 2026 under the stewardship of Georges Kern's House of Brands Group, renewed attention has been focused on the brand's remarkable archive. This Ref. 52215 stands as a wonderful example of Universal Genève's golden era—an elegant chronograph distinguished by its beautiful proportions, uncommon bracelet, and the sort of character that only decades of history can provide.

Brand Story

+
Universal Genève was founded in 1894 by Numa-Emile Descombes and Ulysse Georges Perret, establishing itself early on as a manufacturer of high-quality in-house movements and one of the first Swiss firms to embrace the wristwatch as a serious horological platform.

A pivotal moment came in 1897 when Louis Eduoard Berthoud, a gifted designer of complicated movements, joined the company. Under his technical leadership, Universal Genève became one of the foremost innovators in chronograph development during the 20th century. The brand's celebrated Compur and Compax chronographs earned a devoted following among aviators, military personnel, and collectors, while the Royal Family of the Netherlands granted Universal Genève a royal charter to supply chronographs to the Dutch military.

Beyond its technical achievements, Universal Genève developed a reputation for creating some of the most elegant and influential watches of the mid-century era. From the purpose-built Polerouter—designed by a young Gérald Genta—to refined dress watches such as the Cabriolet and Golden Shadow, the brand combined mechanical innovation with a distinctive sense of style that continues to resonate with collectors today.

Following decades of dormancy, Universal Genève was officially relaunched in 2026 under the stewardship of Georges Kern and the House of Brands Group. The revival marks the return of one of Swiss watchmaking's most revered names, a manufacture whose historic contributions to chronographs, micro-rotor movements, and modern watch design have secured its place among the great maisons of horological history. Vintage Universal Genève watches remain highly sought after, celebrated by collectors, historians, and enthusiasts for their enduring craftsmanship, innovation, and timeless appeal.
