Why We Love it

–

Cartier has always had a gift for making the unusual feel perfectly natural. First introduced in 2007, the Ballon Bleu took the maison’s familiar design vocabulary and gave it an entirely new shape, with a rounded case, sculptural proportions, and a crown that appears to float within its own protective enclosure. It was an immediate departure from the angular geometry of the Tank and Santos, yet somehow every bit as recognizable as a Cartier.

This particular Ballon Bleu is housed in a beautifully polished 36mm 18K rose gold case, a size that strikes an appealing balance between traditional dress-watch proportions and contemporary presence. The silver dial features a finely textured guilloché-style center, bold black Roman numerals, a railroad-style minute track, and blued-steel sword-shaped hands. Of course, the defining detail is that wonderfully eccentric crown, recessed into the case at 3 o’clock and topped with a blue cabochon. The resulting distortion of the dial’s Roman numerals gives the Ballon Bleu much of its distinctive personality.

Powered by a self-winding Cartier movement, the watch is paired with a dark brown alligator leather strap and a signed 18K rose gold Cartier pin buckle. The original warranty card accompanies it.

The Ballon Bleu is one of those rare modern watch designs that feel as though they have always been part of Cartier’s history. Round, but not quite; classical, but just a little unconventional. In rose gold with a silver dial, it captures the maison’s particular talent for turning a simple wristwatch into something considerably more interesting.

Brand Story

+
Cartier's story began in 1904, when Louis Cartier created one of the world's first purpose-built wristwatches for his friend, pioneering aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. The resulting Santos challenged the era's reliance on pocket watches and helped establish the wristwatch as a practical—and elegant—alternative.

In 1917, Cartier introduced what would become its defining creation: the Tank. Inspired by the aerial geometry of the Renault FT tanks used during the First World War, Louis Cartier transformed their parallel tracks into the watch's signature brancards, creating a silhouette whose clean proportions have remained virtually unchanged for more than a century. From the elongated Tank Cintrée and refined Tank Louis Cartier to the architectural Tank Chinoise, the collection has evolved into one of the most influential watch families ever made.

Cartier's appeal has always extended far beyond traditional watch collectors. Worn by cultural icons including Rudolph Valentino, Clark Gable, Andy Warhol, Princess Diana, Muhammad Ali, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, its watches have become symbols of timeless style as much as exceptional design.

Beyond the Tank, collections such as the Santos, Panthère, Pasha, Ballon Bleu, and Crash have each become icons in their own right. Today, Cartier occupies a unique place in horology—one of the few maisons equally revered for its jewelry craftsmanship and its extraordinary contribution to the history of watch design.
