Why We Love it
–Few names in watchmaking carry the weight of Breguet. Founded by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1775, the maison's influence on modern horology is almost impossible to overstate. Yet while collectors often focus on the brand's classical dress watches, the Marine collection represents an equally fascinating chapter in its modern history.
Introduced in 1990, the Marine arrived at a moment when heritage manufacturers were beginning to embrace the growing demand for versatile luxury sports watches. Rather than abandoning its traditions, Breguet did what it does best: it reinterpreted them. The result was a watch that retained the maison's unmistakable design language while introducing a more robust, contemporary character.
This Ref. 3460 SA captures that philosophy beautifully. Executed in an enduring combination of stainless steel and yellow gold, the watch possesses a warmth and presence that feels distinctly 1990s while remaining remarkably relevant today. The signature fluted caseband, integrated bracelet design, and sculpted crown instantly identify the watch as a Breguet, even from across a room.
The silvered guilloché dial is the undeniable star of the show. Engine-turned by hand, it displays a mesmerizing tapestry of textures that shift dramatically as light moves across its surface. Applied Roman numerals frame a trio of recessed registers, while Breguet's famous blued-steel hands glide across the dial with elegant precision. The result is a chronograph that is highly functional without sacrificing an ounce of refinement.
Powered by an automatic chronograph movement and fitted to its original integrated two-tone bracelet, the Ref. 3460 SA offers the best of both worlds: sporting versatility and classical watchmaking pedigree. It is a watch from an era before luxury sports watches became ubiquitous, when brands were still discovering how to blend elegance and utility in their own distinctive ways.
Today, early Marine references are increasingly appreciated for exactly that reason. They feel authentic, unmistakably Breguet, and refreshingly different from anything else on the market. Rich in detail, beautifully executed, and effortlessly wearable, the Ref. 3460 SA remains one of the most compelling expressions of Breguet's transition into the modern era.

+However, these numerals and hands are but a single innovation in a long list of horological firsts devised by master watchmaker and inventor Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823), a Neuchatel-born savant whose Parisian career saw the advent of myriad watchmaking creations that we take for granted today. Indeed, it was Breguet who devised the first self-winding watches, as well as the first gongs for repeating watches and the tourbillon. Not many inventors can claim the king and queen of France as patrons, but indeed King Louis XVI and his bride Marie Antoinette were amongst his admirers.
20th-century Breguet is no less storied: The company’s Type 20 pilot’s chronograph issued to the French Aéronautique Militaire in the 1950s provided a benchmark for military watch design. Its stark black dial and utilitarian look belied the sophisticated retour en vol (“flyback”) mechanism within the movement, which allowed a pilot to stop, reset and start the chronograph by depressing the bottom pusher just once.
More recently, under the current management of Mark A. Hayek, modern Breguet has continued to register new patents and amass a dedicated following. The brand’s “Classique” dress watches from the 1990s and 2000s, for example, feature some of the most striking dials in modern watchmaking, making use of guilloché patterns, blue steeled hands and Roman numerals. While the company’s contemporary offerings continue to increase in sophistication and the number of complications available, it’s surely these simple, gorgeous time-only models that best encapsulate the elegant timepieces of A.L. Breguet himself.
