Why We Love it

–

Some watches are designed to tell the time. Others are designed to make you smile. Leave it to Franck Muller to do both, with a healthy dose of color, creativity, and a wonderfully unconventional approach to traditional Swiss watchmaking.

Founded in Geneva in 1991 by master watchmaker Franck Muller and entrepreneur Vartan Sirmakes, the eponymous brand quickly established a reputation for extraordinary complications, distinctive case shapes, and an irreverent approach to design. Its signature Cintrée Curvex case, with its elongated, barrel-shaped profile and dramatically curved crystal, became one of the most recognizable silhouettes in contemporary watchmaking. And while the brand's mechanical achievements earned it the nickname "Master of Complications," collections like Color Dreams proved that serious horology didn't necessarily have to take itself too seriously.

This particular example, a Reference 7851 SC, captures that playful spirit beautifully. Housed in a polished stainless-steel Cintrée Curvex case (No. 179) measuring approximately 35mm, it features a rich, electric-blue guilloché dial populated with oversized, multicolored Arabic numerals in the brand's unmistakable typography. Scattered across the dial at seemingly random angles, the numerals create a wonderfully chaotic composition that somehow remains perfectly legible. Additional translucent blue numerals add another layer of visual intrigue, while polished luminous hands and a contrasting red seconds hand complete the picture.

Inside, an automatic Swiss movement keeps things running smoothly, while a polished stainless steel bracelet complements the case's sculptural curves. The result is a watch that feels equal parts traditional Swiss craftsmanship and Pop Art, with just enough eccentricity to make it unmistakably Franck Muller. A multi-link steel bracelet with a deployant clasp keeps things versatile and sporty.

Accompanied by its inner and outer boxes and certificate of origin, this Color Dreams is a terrific example of the brand's more exuberant side. For anyone who believes that a fine mechanical watch should have a little personality, this one has it in every color of the rainbow! Who says telling time has to be a serious business?

Brand Story

+
Franck Muller, born to an Italian mother and a Swiss father, got his start in watchmaking at a young age, enrolling in watchmaking school at age 15 and graduating from Ecole d'Horlogerie de Genève in the 1980s. After a start repairing high-end pocket watches for private clients and museums, he created his own tourbillon-equipped wristwatch in 1984. In 1991, he established his own eponymous brand.
Known for their distinctive tonneau-shaped cases, Franck Muller watches frequently contain high complications and are produced in limited series, such as the triple-axis tourbillon — a world first that premiered in 2004 after a years-long development period. Alongside these highly complicated pieces are time-only and time-and-date models that take the best in design languages from classic brands like Cartier and marry it to contemporary movements and stunning dials.
Beloved the world over, Franck Muller watches dazzle with their unique aesthetics and sophisticated horology, and have been worn by celebrities as varied as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Paris Hilton. The brand currently has five watchmaking facilities and hundreds of retailers across the globe.
