Produced from 1951 through the mid-1960s, it occupies a fascinating place in the brand's history, bridging the restrained elegance of earlier Calatravas with the increasingly modern proportions that would define the decades to come.
Like many of Patek Philippe's finest postwar dress watches, the Ref. 2508 pairs understated styling with thoughtful engineering. A manually wound movement sits inside a screw-back case—an advanced construction for the era that offered greater protection from the elements than the snap-back cases of many contemporaries. Its architecture also places it firmly within a family of celebrated mid-century references, sharing its broad design language with watches like the 2526 and 2509 — the sub-seconds version of the 2508 — whose strong, flowing lugs define some of Patek's most enduring silhouettes.

What immediately sets the Ref. 2508 apart, however, is its size. Measuring 35mm in diameter, it was notably large by early-1950s standards. Combined with its long, elegantly tapered lugs, the watch wears even larger than its dimensions suggest, giving it exceptional wrist presence without sacrificing the refined proportions expected of a classic Calatrava. More than seventy years later, the result is a vintage dress watch that feels remarkably contemporary on the wrist.

Although just over 1,000 examples were produced, relatively few have resurfaced on the collector market. Today, we're fortunate to have two outstanding examples in our inventory, each representing a distinct chapter in the reference's production.
The first is cased in rose gold — the considerably rarer metal — and features the reference's earlier dial configuration, with alternating square and triangular hour markers accented by a blued center seconds hand. It's a wonderfully distinctive execution that reflects the subtle experimentation of early-1950s Patek Philippe.
The second, in yellow gold, wears a more familiar Calatrava aesthetic, pairing faceted applied indexes with elegant dauphine hands. While the two watches differ in character, what truly unites them is their extraordinary state of preservation.

In vintage collecting, condition is often the defining characteristic separating a good watch from an exceptional one. As surviving numbers dwindle, untouched examples become exponentially more difficult to find — and correspondingly more desirable.
These two Ref. 2508s illustrate exactly why.
The first place to look is the case hallmarks beside the crown. Here, both remain remarkably crisp and deeply struck, suggesting that the cases have seen little, if any, polishing over the course of their lives. Equally telling are the lugs. Viewed head-on, they retain their original symmetry, with balanced proportions and sharp transitions from case to lug. When those shapes become uneven or softened, it's often evidence of excessive refinishing.
A careful polish isn't necessarily detrimental, but preserving the original geometry of a case is one of the hallmarks of a truly collector-grade watch. It's these seemingly small details that preserve the character — and ultimately the integrity — of a vintage reference.
Patek Philippe produced countless Calatravas throughout the 20th century, yet many of its most compelling references remain surprisingly underrepresented simply because so few examples survive in exceptional condition. The Reference 2508 is one of those watches.
