Why We Love it

While Universal Genève is best remembered today for its celebrated chronographs and the Gérald Genta-designed Polerouter, the manufacture was equally adept at producing elegant dress watches that reflected the changing tastes of the postwar era. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Universal Genève embraced clean lines, modern proportions, and understated sophistication, creating timepieces that remain remarkably contemporary decades later.

This handsome rectangular model is a wonderful example of that approach. Executed in stainless steel and measuring a compact 20mm by 28mm, the watch embraces the refined proportions that defined mid-century dress watches. The brushed silver dial is beautifully restrained, featuring elongated 'Roman' numerals that radiate from the center with an almost architectural quality. Paired with slender painted black hands and a minimalist two-hand layout, the design achieves an elegant balance between formality and modernism.

The sharply defined rectangular case further enhances the watch's clean aesthetic. Free from unnecessary embellishment, it frames the dial with crisp geometric lines that recall the enduring appeal of classic Tank-style watches while maintaining a distinct Universal Genève identity. The result is a watch that feels equally appropriate with tailoring today as it would have in the 1950s.

Powering the watch is a manual wind mechanical movement, a fitting companion to a design that prioritizes simplicity and refinement above all else. Paired with a black leather strap, this Universal Genève offers the kind of incredibly understated sophistication that has become increasingly difficult to find in contemporary watchmaking.

Elegant, slightly strict, and unmistakably mid-century, this Universal Genève serves as a reminder that some of the brand's most compelling creations were also its simplest. It really is so chic!

Brand Story

+
Universal Genève was founded in 1894 by Numa-Emile Descombes and Ulysse Georges Perret, establishing itself early on as a manufacturer of high-quality in-house movements and one of the first Swiss firms to embrace the wristwatch as a serious horological platform.

A pivotal moment came in 1897 when Louis Eduoard Berthoud, a gifted designer of complicated movements, joined the company. Under his technical leadership, Universal Genève became one of the foremost innovators in chronograph development during the 20th century. The brand's celebrated Compur and Compax chronographs earned a devoted following among aviators, military personnel, and collectors, while the Royal Family of the Netherlands granted Universal Genève a royal charter to supply chronographs to the Dutch military.

Beyond its technical achievements, Universal Genève developed a reputation for creating some of the most elegant and influential watches of the mid-century era. From the purpose-built Polerouter—designed by a young Gérald Genta—to refined dress watches such as the Cabriolet and Golden Shadow, the brand combined mechanical innovation with a distinctive sense of style that continues to resonate with collectors today.

Following decades of dormancy, Universal Genève was officially relaunched in 2026 under the stewardship of Georges Kern and the House of Brands Group. The revival marks the return of one of Swiss watchmaking's most revered names, a manufacture whose historic contributions to chronographs, micro-rotor movements, and modern watch design have secured its place among the great maisons of horological history. Vintage Universal Genève watches remain highly sought after, celebrated by collectors, historians, and enthusiasts for their enduring craftsmanship, innovation, and timeless appeal.
