–1965 Porsche 'Once In A Generation'
It’s easy to take for granted a vehicle — a design — that has endured in our hearts and minds over the course of our lifetime
Designed by Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche and introduced in 1964, the Porsche 911 was voted fifth in a 1999 poll for the Car of the Century. Streamlined, attractive, and fast as hell, it’s both a racing monster and a luxurious roadster, beloved for its performance and appearance. This simple, black and white magazine ad from 1965 may likewise be the very first ad for the 911. Just get a load of that copy: “Once in a generation, the opportunity arises to create an entirely new car…Result: The new Porsche.”
.And although speed is often associated with Porsche, when you see this ad, you should slow down and appreciate where it all started, before the 911 became arguably the most loved, most lusted-after car of all time.
For 911 lovers, this is an important piece of history from the very beginnings of the Carrera story — hell, it well predates the use of the name “Carrera.” Stark, direct, and with the tone of a classic movie poster, it’s the type of advertisement that belongs on the wall of a Porsche devotee’s office. (Actually, scratch that: If you’re lucky enough to have a 911 in your garage, we’d recommend hanging this baby right next to it, for company.)
