Why We Love it
–Some watches define a complication. Others redefine the watch itself.
For decades, the Reference 3940 has stood as Patek Philippe's quintessential perpetual calendar, a masterpiece of proportion and mechanical elegance that helped usher traditional Swiss watchmaking into the modern era. Introduced during the height of the Quartz Crisis in 1985, it demonstrated that craftsmanship, innovation, and timeless design still had a place in haute horlogerie. The Ref. 5940, introduced a generation later, took that celebrated formula in a bold new direction.
Rather than housing its legendary perpetual calendar movement in a traditional round case, Patek Philippe opted for a softly curved tonneau-shaped case that recalls the elegant shapes of Art Deco watches. Crafted in 18k yellow gold, the 5940J possesses a wonderfully architectural presence on the wrist, offering a distinctive alternative to its round-cased sibling while retaining every bit of its mechanical pedigree.
The silver-white dial is unmistakably Patek Philippe. Applied Breguet numerals lend warmth and character, while the beautifully balanced perpetual calendar displays the day, month, leap year, date, and moonphase with exceptional clarity. Despite the immense amount of information on display, the dial never feels crowded, a testament to Patek Philippe's unparalleled talent for visual restraint.
Beneath the solid gold case beats the legendary self-winding Calibre 240 Q. Powered by an off-center 22K gold micro-rotor, the movement remains one of the finest automatic perpetual calendar calibres ever produced. Slim, elegant, and exquisitely finished, it perfectly complements the refined proportions of the watch while showcasing the level of craftsmanship that has defined Patek Philippe for generations.
Paired with a brown alligator leather strap and crafted as a true Grand Complication, the Ref. 5940J occupies a fascinating place within the modern Patek Philippe catalog. It offers all of the technical brilliance of the celebrated Ref. 3940, wrapped in a case that is more distinctive, more architectural, and arguably even more elegant.
For collectors who appreciate perpetual calendars but seek something beyond the expected, the 5940 remains one of Patek Philippe's most compelling modern creations. Sophisticated without being ostentatious, familiar yet refreshingly uncommon, it is a watch that quietly rewards those who know exactly what they're looking at.
