Patek Philippe has long set the standard for complicated watchmaking, producing some of the finest chronographs ever created. From the legendary references of the 1940s and 1950s to today’s in-house masterpieces, the Geneva manufacture has consistently demonstrated that true luxury lies not in excess, but in impeccable design, flawless execution, and mechanical excellence.

The Reference 5172G-010 is perhaps the purest expression of that philosophy. Introduced as the evolution of the celebrated 5170, it combines thoroughly modern proportions with unmistakable vintage-inspired details, creating one of the most compelling manually wound chronographs in Patek Philippe’s current collection. Its 41mm 18K white gold case is beautifully proportioned, featuring elegant three-tier stepped lugs, a polished stepped bezel, and tasti tondi (Italian for round pushers) pump pushers that pay homage to the maison’s revered mid-century chronographs.

The rose gilt dial is where the 5172G truly comes alive. Applied white gold 'Arabic' numerals with luminous accents, blued steel 'syringe' hands, twin recessed registers, and a tachymeter scale evoke the look and feel of Patek Philippe’s most celebrated vintage references while remaining unmistakably contemporary. Every element has been thoughtfully considered, resulting in a dial that is both remarkably legible and effortlessly elegant.

Visible through the sapphire exhibition caseback is the exceptional Caliber CH 29-535 PS, Patek Philippe’s fully in-house, manually wound chronograph movement. Widely regarded as one of the finest traditional chronograph calibers in production, it combines six patented chronograph innovations with exquisite hand-finishing, a classic column-wheel architecture, and the tactile satisfaction that only a manually wound chronograph can provide.

Accompanying the watch is a true collector-grade suite of accessories, including its inner and outer presentation boxes, Certificate of Origin, warranty card, warranty booklet, instruction manuals and pamphlets, and the original signed white gold buckle.

Among modern Patek Philippe chronographs, the 5172G occupies a particularly special place. It captures everything enthusiasts admire about the manufacture’s golden age—warm dial tones, syringe hands, stepped architecture, and traditional chronograph mechanics—while benefiting from the engineering, reliability, and finishing of a contemporary masterpiece. For collectors seeking a modern Patek that wears like tomorrow’s vintage classic, few references are more complete than the 5172G-010.
