Why We Love it

Patek Philippe has sat atop the horological mountain for going on two centuries, having earned near-universal acclaim for its proficiencies in designing, engineering, and manufacturing some of the most exquisite timepieces the world has ever seen.

The celebrated maison has a tradition of creating watches that transcend generations. Leaning on the pillars of timeless design, refinement, and mechanical ingenuity, there’s arguably no other manufacture that does it better.

Within Patek's collections, few complications are more attractive than the manually-wound chronograph. Complicated to get right, and beautiful both on the wrist and on the caseback, these pieces make a statement.

This piece, a Reference 5170J-001, features a 39mm 18K yellow gold case with a polished bezel, signed crown, rectangular pushers, and a sapphire exhibition caseback framing the maison's Calibre 29-535 manual-winding movement.

Its dial may be one of our favorite configurations for several reasons. Firstly, the applied 'Roman' gold indices paired with a matching, polished handset add a certain glint to a monochromatic dial. Furthermore, the 'Roman' layout in particular adds a traditional flair to a contemporary piece.

Finally, the chemin de fer minute track and pulsations scale...well, those should speak for themselves. But in case they don't, we believe that a pulsations scale — which is used to take a patient's pulse — has a distinguishable aesthetic compared to a traditional tachymeter scale. And frankly, it adds a bit more fun and a breath of fresh air to a watch design.

If you're on the hunt for a chronograph with classic looks, excellent build quality, and a tremendous pedigree, this Ref. 5170J will set you straight!

Brand Story

+
Founded in Geneva in 1839, Patek Philippe occupies a rare position in watchmaking: a manufacture whose name has become shorthand for the very highest level of traditional Swiss horology. Its reputation has been built not simply on complication, but on an extraordinary continuity of design, technical innovation, hand-finishing, and craftsmanship. From the elemental elegance of the Calatrava to milestones such as the Reference 1518, the first serially produced perpetual-calendar chronograph wristwatch, Patek Philippe has repeatedly created watches that define their categories rather than participate in them.

Family-owned and independent since the Stern family acquired the company in 1932, Patek has the unusual freedom to think in generations rather than seasons. That independence has produced some wonderfully contrarian decisions, including discontinuing the wildly desirable steel Nautilus Reference 5711 at the height of its popularity. Today, its collection spans restrained dress watches, complicated masterpieces, and contemporary icons such as the Nautilus and Aquanaut, yet a remarkably consistent design language runs through them all.

For many collectors, owning a Patek Philippe represents something close to the summit of the hobby; for others, Patek becomes the hobby itself. Either way, few manufactures combine history, mechanical achievement, design, rarity, and emotion quite so convincingly. And, yes, as the famous campaign has reminded us for decades, ownership is supposedly temporary. You never actually own a Patek Philippe…Well, you know the rest.
