Why We Love it

There’s something about a mid-century chronograph in yellow gold that immediately sets a standard. Gold paired with a black dial feels dramatic, even cinematic.

This rare 1940s Marvin chronograph leans fully into the latter. Housed in a beautifully proportioned 36mm 14K yellow-gold case, it captures the particular kind of elegance that only vintage chronographs seem capable of—equal parts sport, science, and old-world glamour.

The first thing that grabs you is the dial. Deep black with glossy gilt printing, it has the kind of warmth and richness that we know our collectors love. Arabic numerals and twin registers float against the lacquered surface, while the French pulsation scale around the outer edge adds just the right amount of medical-instrument seriousness. (“Calculé sur 15 pulsations” is objectively cooler than almost anything printed on a modern dial.) The entire composition feels incredibly balanced, right down to the subtle aging and creamy gilt accents.

Then there are the lugs. Hinged and sculptural, they give the watch a dramatic profile on the wrist and elevate the entire case design into something distinctly more elegant than your average vintage chronograph. Add in the beautifully engraved Marvin crown and the shields logo stamped on the caseback, and the details just keep rewarding closer inspection.

Inside beats the legendary Valjoux 22, one of the great manually wound chronograph calibers of the era and a movement that powered many of the most collectible chronographs of the mid-20th century for good reason: robust, elegant, and endlessly satisfying to operate.

Paired to a dark brown leather strap with a gold pin buckle, this Marvin feels like the kind of watch someone wore while timing laps at Monza before disappearing into a smoke-filled café afterward.

We love it because vintage chronographs should have a little danger, a little romance, and great lugs. Don’t you think?

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1850 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, Marvin built its reputation on producing elegant, technically robust watches with a distinctly refined design language. By the mid-20th century, the brand had become especially known for its beautifully balanced chronographs and waterproof dress watches, many powered by legendary calibers from Valjoux and other premier movement makers of the era. While Marvin never pursued the same level of mass-market recognition as some of its competitors, that relative under-the-radar status has become part of its charm today—offering collectors access to exceptionally designed vintage watches that still feel like insider discoveries.
