Why We Love it

–

It’s not easy designing a modern-day wristwatch icon — but in the 1990s, French outfit Bell & Ross pulled it off.

The brand’s instrument panel-inspired BR-01, with its square case, stark dial, and rubber strap, quickly made waves in the watch world, leading to an explosion in popularity for the fledgling Parisian brand. Since then, Bell & Ross has expanded into different case shapes and design profiles — but the square BR-01’s evolution, the BR-03, remains a mainstay in the catalog.

This particular BR-03 is a Reference BR0392-D-TRCE/SRB from circa 2020s. Housed in a 42mm blue ceramic case with a sapphire crystal and a signed crown, it features a luminous blue dial with applique indices, a matching handset, and a date window at 4:30. Absurdly legible and boasting military-inspired cool, it’s powered by a Swiss-made BR-CAL.302 automatic movement with about a 40-hour power reserve and comes paired to a signed, rubber strap with a signed stainless pin buckle.

This piece is part of a limited edition of just 999 examples in this ceramic configuration to celebrate Bell and Ross's collaboration with Tara Ocean, a foundation dedicated to protecting the world's oceans.

In practically unworn condition overall and including its factory goodies, this masterpiece of utilitarian design is an excellent entry point into the world of Bell & Ross, and into the realm of military-inspired design in general.

Try it on for yourself!

Brand Story

+
In an industry dominated by companies whose histories stretch back centuries, Bell & Ross is something of an anomaly: a relatively young watchmaker that has managed to establish one of the most recognizable design languages in modern horology.

Founded in Paris in the early 1990s by childhood friends Bruno Belamich and Carlos Rosillo — the "Bell" and "Ross," respectively — the company was conceived with a singular purpose: to build highly legible, robust timepieces inspired by the instruments used by pilots, divers, and other professionals operating in extreme environments.

To realize this vision, the pair turned to German watchmaker Sinn, whose expertise in purpose-built tool watches made it a natural manufacturing partner. Early Bell & Ross models were produced by Sinn in Germany, and shared much of their design DNA with the latter company's famously overbuilt chronographs and dive watches. Following an investment by French luxury house Chanel in the late 1990s, Bell & Ross moved production to Switzerland in 2002.

However, it was the introduction of the BR 01 in 2005 that truly put Bell & Ross on the horological map. Taking its inspiration directly from an aircraft cockpit instrument, the watch featured a massive, 46mm square case with four prominent screws, a circular dial, and oversized luminous indices. It was unlike virtually anything else on the market, and became an instant calling card for the young brand. A smaller BR 03 followed in 2006, bringing the distinctive design to a somewhat more wearable format.

Though the company has since expanded into more conventional round-cased watches, integrated-bracelet sports models, and even high complications, its commitment to legibility, functionality, and striking industrial design remains unchanged. For a brand with barely three decades of history, Bell & Ross has accomplished something that takes most watchmakers generations: creating a watch that can be identified from across the room.
