Why We Love it

Why We Love it
–The Calatrava has defined Patek Philippe’s idea of the round dress watch since the Reference 96 debuted in 1932. More than 80 years later, the Ref. 5227G-015 demonstrates just how little that fundamental formula needs to change when the proportions and details are this good.
Its polished 18K white gold case measures a contemporary 39mm across while remaining just 9.24mm thick. Long, gently curved lugs flow almost seamlessly from the caseband, giving the 5227 a graceful profile that feels substantial enough for modern tastes without losing the elegance expected of a Calatrava.
The dial is particularly handsome. Featuring a salmon-colored rose-gilt opaline dial, it features applied faceted hour markers, sharply defined dauphine hands, a restrained peripheral minute track, and a framed date aperture at 3 o’clock. There’s very little here, but that’s precisely the point: proportion, finishing, and typography do nearly all the work.
Turn the watch over and things become considerably more interesting. What appears to be a traditional solid officer-style caseback is actually an extraordinarily thin hinged dust cover, integrated so neatly into the case that its hinge is almost invisible. Open it, and a sapphire crystal reveals the beautifully finished calibre 26-330 S C self-winding movement beneath.
This example is paired with a shiny dark chestnut alligator strap and matching 18K white gold prong buckle. Its Certificate of Origin accompanies it, associated papers and pamphlets, and a signed Patek Philippe leather travel roll.
The Ref. 5227G is classic Patek with one wonderfully discreet trick up its sleeve. Elegant, beautifully proportioned, and far more interesting than its apparent simplicity suggests, it’s the sort of Calatrava that reminds you why the basic round dress watch is so difficult to improve upon.
