Why We Love it

–

Not every Patek Philippe needs a perpetual calendar, minute repeater, or tourbillon to make its point. Sometimes great design, beautiful finishing, and a handful of diamonds will do just fine.

Introduced in 1999, the Twenty~4 was Patek Philippe’s answer to the idea of a watch that could easily transition from day to evening. Its original rectangular form remains perhaps the purest expression of the collection, combining an Art Deco-inflected case with an integrated bracelet to create something that sits somewhere between wristwatch and jewelry.

This Ref. 4910/1200A-010 is a particularly handsome execution. Fashioned from stainless steel, its rectangular case is flanked by the Twenty~4’s signature diamond-set brancards, set with 36 diamonds totaling approximately 0.42 carats. Rather than overwhelming the design, they emphasize the case's long vertical architecture and provide a sharp contrast against the steel.

The real surprise, however, is the dial. Finished in a rich sunburst brown, it shifts dramatically with the light from deep chocolate to warm bronze. Applied baton markers join oversized Arabic numerals at 6 and 12, while luminous hands and hour markers add a practical element to an otherwise decidedly polished affair. The integrated multi-link steel bracelet continues directly from the case, giving the entire watch a fluid, almost cuff-like presence on the wrist.

Inside is Patek Philippe’s quartz Calibre E 15. While mechanical movements tend to dominate the conversation about collecting, quartz feels entirely appropriate here. The Twenty~4 was conceived as an elegant, effortless everyday watch, and the slim, precise movement allows the design to remain the focus.

This example is accompanied by an impressively complete kit, including its inner and outer boxes, Certificate of Origin, papers and pamphlets, and hangtags. More than 25 years after the Twenty~4 debuted, the original rectangular design looks remarkably fresh. In steel, diamonds, and that fantastic brown dial, this one gets the formula particularly right.

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design is without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is, for many, the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepiece they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.

Of course, for a brand steeped in heritage, we are told, “You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”

Well, you know the rest.
