Why We Love it

–

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut may be one of the most important modern luxury sport watches on the market.

The Reference 5060J, launched in 1996 for the 20th anniversary of the Nautilus, was a sort of transitional watch. Borrowing features from the Nautilus but doing away with the famed case “ears” of that porthole-inspired model and adding lugs, it provided the basis for the Reference 5060A in 1997, the first model actually bearing the Aquanaut name. The Aquanaut would go on to form the basis of a full collection of luxury sports watches that provided the entry point into the Patek Philippe catalog.

This piece, a Reference 5167/1A-001, dates to 2016 and features a 40mm stainless steel case with a satin-finished bezel, sapphire crystal, a signed screw-down crown and a water resistance rating up to 120 meters. On the dial you'll find all of the signature Aquanaut features present — offered in an ombre anthracite tone that fades to black towards the edges, 'hobnail' texturing, luminous Arabic indices, a matching luminous handset and a date indicator at 3 o’clock.

In excellent condition  throughout and fitted to a black rubber strap with a signed steel button-deployant clasp, this piece is accompanied by all of its factory goodies including its inner and outer box set, signed leather folio, and a Certificate of Origin, alongside the signed steel multi-link bracelet it was originally sold with.

With more presence on the wrist compared to its older siblings, the 5167 remains one of most highly-coveted steel sport watches on the market.

Try it on and you'll see why!

Brand Story

+
Founded in Geneva in 1839, Patek Philippe occupies a rare position in watchmaking: a manufacture whose name has become shorthand for the very highest level of traditional Swiss horology. Its reputation has been built not simply on complication, but on an extraordinary continuity of design, technical innovation, hand-finishing, and craftsmanship. From the elemental elegance of the Calatrava to milestones such as the Reference 1518, the first serially produced perpetual-calendar chronograph wristwatch, Patek Philippe has repeatedly created watches that define their categories rather than participate in them.

Family-owned and independent since the Stern family acquired the company in 1932, Patek has the unusual freedom to think in generations rather than seasons. That independence has produced some wonderfully contrarian decisions, including discontinuing the wildly desirable steel Nautilus Reference 5711 at the height of its popularity. Today, its collection spans restrained dress watches, complicated masterpieces, and contemporary icons such as the Nautilus and Aquanaut, yet a remarkably consistent design language runs through them all.

For many collectors, owning a Patek Philippe represents something close to the summit of the hobby; for others, Patek becomes the hobby itself. Either way, few manufactures combine history, mechanical achievement, design, rarity, and emotion quite so convincingly. And, yes, as the famous campaign has reminded us for decades, ownership is supposedly temporary. You never actually own a Patek Philippe…

Well, you know the rest.
