Why We Love it

–

Patek Philippe has a particular talent for making a very complicated watch look remarkably composed. The Annual Calendar Chronograph is a perfect example, combining two genuinely useful complications in a layout that remains surprisingly intuitive. The Ref. 5961P-001 takes that formula and turns the volume up considerably, pairing platinum with a diamond-set case and one of the most striking blue dials in the collection. Even the Calatrava symbol on the deployant clasp is also set with diamonds, but who’s counting!

The platinum case measures approximately 40.5mm and is framed by a bezel set with baguette-cut diamonds, echoed by matching baguette diamond hour markers on the dial. Against the rich blue background, three apertures across the upper half display the day, date, and month, while a power-reserve indicator sits just below 12 o’clock. The lower half is dominated by Patek’s distinctive combined chronograph register, which neatly organizes elapsed hours and minutes without cluttering the dial with multiple subdials. The annual calendar itself requires correction only once a year, at the end of February.

Inside is Patek Philippe’s self-winding Calibre CH 28-520 IRM QA 24H, combining a flyback chronograph with the annual calendar, power-reserve indication, and day/night display. Visible through the sapphire caseback, the movement uses a column-wheel chronograph with a vertical clutch, allowing the central chronograph seconds hand to run continuously without undue wear if desired. The watch is paired with a black alligator strap and platinum Patek Philippe clasp.

This example is accompanied by its inner and outer boxes, complete papers and pamphlets, Certificate of Origin, and setting tool. The Reference 5961P-001 is certainly not the quietest expression of Patek Philippe’s complicated watchmaking, but that’s precisely the point. Platinum, baguette-cut diamonds, a blue dial, an annual calendar, and a flyback chronograph make for a lot in a watch, yet somehow, Patek makes it all work. Spectacularly!

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design is without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is, for many, the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepiece they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.

Of course, for a brand steeped in heritage, we are told, “You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”

Well, you know the rest.
