Why We Love it

Not every Patek Philippe plays by the rules.

Sure, we all love a clean Calatrava, a sporty Aquanaut, or a complicated perpetual calendar—but the real magic often lies in the outliers. The shaped, limited-production pieces are where the brand lets its imagination run wild, giving us some of the most intriguing designs in its history.

The Gondolo is one such creation, and its story begins far from Geneva—in Rio de Janeiro. Between 1902 and 1927, Patek Philippe created the Chronometro Gondolo for the Brazilian retailer Gondolo & Labouriau. This partnership gave rise to a collection characterized by geometry, glamour, and a distinctly Art Deco aesthetic. It’s Patek Philippe with a touch of attitude: elegant, architectural, and ever so slightly rebellious.

This reference 5124G keeps that spirit alive. Its white gold rectangular case measures 43 by 33mm, framing a salmon dial that feels effortlessly cool with printed black Breguet numerals, a chemin de fer minute track, and blued 'leaf' hands—crisp, classic, and just the right amount of unexpected. Through the sapphire display back, the hand-wound calibre 25-21 REC reminds you that, even when Patek has fun, it never cuts corners.

Paired with a light brown alligator strap and a white gold buckle, this Gondolo walks the line between refined and rakish. It’s dressy without being stiff, stylish without trying too hard—a reminder that even the most traditional watchmaker knows how to surprise us.

Once you see it in person, we know you won't be able to resist its charms!

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.

Of course for a brand that is steeped in heritage, we are told “You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”

Well, you know the rest.
