Why We Love it

There is a reason the Calatrava remains the benchmark against which all dress watches are measured.

For nearly a century, Patek Philippe's most enduring collection has embodied the manufacture's philosophy of elegant simplicity. Free from unnecessary complication and guided by a steadfast commitment to proportion, refinement, and craftsmanship, the Calatrava has become one of the most influential watch designs ever created. While many brands have attempted to define the perfect dress watch, few have come closer than Patek Philippe.

This particular example, Ref. 3913/001 dating to 1988, showcases the Calatrava at its most graceful. Crafted in 18k yellow gold, its 31mm case is paired with a beautifully integrated yellow-gold bracelet that flows seamlessly from the case and closes with a signed foldover clasp. The result is a watch that wears more like fine jewelry than a traditional wristwatch, while retaining the quiet sophistication that defines the Calatrava name.

The dial is a study in restraint. Executed in a crisp white finish, it features elegant applied Roman numerals in yellow gold that seem to float effortlessly above the surface. Their delicate proportions are complemented by a simple two-hand layout, creating a sense of balance and clarity that feels every bit as compelling today as it did in the late 1980s. There is nothing superfluous here—just exceptional design distilled to its purest form.

Powered by a slim Patek Philippe manually wound movement and accompanied by its original Certificate of Origin dated 1988, travel case, manuals, papers, and pamphlets, this example represents a complete and wonderfully preserved expression of the manufacture's craft.

Elegant, understated, and undeniably timeless, this yellow-gold Calatrava serves as a reminder that true luxury rarely needs to announce itself. Sometimes, perfection is simply a white dial, a gold bracelet, and the name Patek Philippe.

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.
