Why We Love it

Few names in Swiss watchmaking carry the quiet authority of Girard-Perregaux. With roots tracing back to the late 18th century, the manufacture has weathered revolutions in taste and technology alike — from early adoption of wristwatches to meaningful contributions to quartz engineering. But long before high-frequency oscillators and Laureato hype, GP excelled at something far more elemental: the perfectly judged dress watch.

This automatic winding dress watch is an excellent example of what we mean. In the 1950s, the newest developments in watch technology revolved around automatic winding movement development, and GP was at the forefront. In 1950, GP presented the Gyromatic, which replaced ratchet winding with roller clutches that are far more efficient.

The Gyromatic allowed Girard-Perregaux to develop slimmer, more efficient compact dress watches. This piece is just one example. Fashioned from stainless steel, this dress swatch features stronger 3,6,9, and 12 indices, with further applied indices for the minor indexes. The dial is fashioned in a silver hue and is topped off with a 'pencil' handset.

Slim, elegant, and refreshingly unfussy, this is the kind of watch that makes a strong case for restraint. It also marks an important part in the evolution of watches in general with advanced automatic winding movement systems.

Brand Story

+
Few manufactures can trace their lineage as far back, or as credibly, as Girard-Perregaux. Founded in 1791, the brand stands among the true old guard of Swiss watchmaking, a maison that has quietly shaped the evolution of the wristwatch for more than two centuries.

From the start, Girard-Perregaux balanced aesthetics with engineering ambition. In the 19th century, Constant Girard’s Three Gold Bridges tourbillon transformed movement architecture into visual theater — not just a technical solution, but a design language. That instinct to elevate mechanics into art would define the house.

By the early 20th century, GP was producing wristwatches at a time when pocket watches still dominated, positioning itself ahead of shifting tastes. Decades later, in 1966, the brand unveiled one of the first high-frequency movements beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour — a meaningful leap in chronometric performance. And in 1971, Girard-Perregaux developed one of the earliest Swiss quartz calibers, helping establish the 32,768 Hz frequency that remains the global standard today.

Yet for all its technical milestones, GP’s enduring appeal lies in its balance: refinement without flash, innovation without noise. Two centuries on, the bridges still remain. Art and mechanics, past and present, precision and beauty.
