Why We Love it
–Many younger collectors invariably associate Waltham with the gold-filled dress watches hidden away in dusty cases in antique stores across the United States. However, the defunct American brand was once responsible for producing millions of reliable timekeepers, among them some of the most important military watches of the 1940s and 1950s.
Take this A-17, for example. Responding to a post-War government tender, Waltham produced it beneath the MIL-W-6433 specification beginning in 1950 for issue to U.S. Air Force Pilots. Diminutive by modern standards, its smaller size nevertheless packs a solid punch in the form of beautiful mil-spec design. (This is to say nothing of the recent popularity of smaller case sizes, which can be seen on famous wrists on red carpets everywhere these days.)
Measuring 31mm in a stainless steel case from Star Watch Co. with a coin-edge bezel, an unsigned crown, and an acrylic crystal, this A-17 features a matte-black dial with an outer five-minute track; a white minute track overlaid with radium 'block' indices; a set of radium 'Arabic' indices; an inner white 24-hour track; and a radium-filled 'syringe' handset with an arrow-tipped seconds hand. Though the radium is no longer luminous, its pleasant orange patina lends the dial a welcome vintage glow.
Powered by the Waltham Calibre 683 manually-wound movement with 17 jewels and paired to a two-piece green fabric strap with chrome hardware, the watch bears a detailed caseback engraving detailing its issue and specification numbers.
Simple yet beautiful, this A-17 is still working strong some 75 years after its manufacturing. With a design this handsome and versatile, why on Earth would you spring for something more modern?
