Why We Love it
–While triple calendars like the Tri-Compax by Universal Genève cause a furor among the vintage watch community, true cognoscenti know the value in less recognizable names. To those who know, names like Wittnauer and Wakmann speak of quality, and of deeper connections to more established names that are seen in advertisements today (such as Longines and Breitling).
It's to the latter that Wakmann has the closest relationship--like Wittnauer, which imported Longines watches into the United States, Wakmann imported Swiss-made watches (in this case, by Breitling) into the United States from 1940s to the 1970s.
Some watches from this era were actually co-signed as Breitling/Wakmann. However Wakmann also brought their own line of sporting timepieces to the market, including these brilliant calendar chronographs. The brand often utilized Breitling's supply chain of high grade components, but retailed their branded watches with entry level price points.
We've carried Wakmann Triple Calendars before, to great success. These examples were sporty steel variants with a reverse panda color-way reminiscent of the famous "Evil Eric" Universal Genève Tri-Compax. But these watches were also available in gold or gold-plated cases produced by Gigandet, who in turn provided them to other brands like Vulcain.
A gold chronograph can be a hard sell. For a complication that's so often used in sports or war, a gold dress chronograph seems a tad incongruous. And yet brands from Zenith and its daughter brand Movado to Wakmann's parent company Breitling released scads of gorgeous chronos in 18k yellow and pink gold, firmly elevating this sporty complication into the luxury sphere.
But don't let the precious metal fool you--the case of this Wakmann Triple Calendar is substantial despite the seeming delicacy of its covering, a sturdy presence on the wrist.
