THE BASIC IDEA

When we’re not scouring the internet for an alluring coupe, a hot-hatch or a boxy 4x4, we’re not afraid to admit that we’re looking for wagons.

What do we love about ‘em? Well, for starters, they’re practical! No matter if you’re shuffling the kids around town or packing it up to the ceiling for a road trip, the wagon makes any task that involves driving around seamless — the Swiss-Army Knife of vehicles, if you will.

The Volvo 740 Turbo was introduced in 1984 and would become the best selling model series in the 700 model family, known for its boxy design and powerful drivetrain. The 740 Turbo also crosses paths with the legendary salad dressing magnate, Paul Newman, who is also occasionally referenced in the watch community as a man of some influence. Paul famously owned a few 740 Turbos, completely overhauling one mechanically, throwing in a turbocharged 3.8 liter V6 from a Buick Grand National.

That said, the factory setting for the Volvo 740 Turbo already put it a level or two above any other wagon on the market at the time. This ad here exemplifies the utility-nature of the 740, implying the hidden sportiness of the car by having the unmistakable silhouette of a Lamborghini Countach in the foreground … towing a trailer. Between the vibrant orange used as the background for the imagery and the stark black and white copy, this ad is as punchy as they come, and a masterwork of graphic design.

Sourced and presented by Ad Patina, this piece is custom framed in a 13” x 15 3/4” solid wood frame with a black painted finish. It features a custom-measured, hand-cut 4-ply border in a shade of white, complimenting all the ad tones. Every material used is acid-free and the glass is anti-reflective and offers UV-protection to keep this precious ad preserved no matter where you decide to hang it. Speaking of which, hanging your newly purchased ad is a seamless task, as this particular frame comes with an additional hanging wire and felt pads for wall protection.

The Volvo 740 Turbo is essentially a wolf in sheep’s clothing and this ad encapsulates it perfectly. Nothing here but love and Swedish hooliganism. Don't miss it!
