Why We Love it

Vacheron Constantin, one of the so-called ‘Holy Trinity’ of Swiss watchmakers, took somewhat of a left turn in 2018 with the release of the FiftySix collection.

Based upon the case profile of a reference from 1956, this collection was aimed at a younger demographic, and as such, was priced more affordably than the remainder of the watches in the contemporary Vacheron catalog. One of the standout references from this relatively new line is a complete calendar that is absolutely breathtaking in its design and finishing. And while it may be more accessible than its cousins from Patek Philippe, it’s certainly no less notable a timepiece!

The particular example we have here is housed in a stainless steel case with a sapphire crystal, a signed crown, a stepped bezel, and beautifully shaped lugs that are a signature of the maison’s dress watches. It features a gorgeous, deep navy blue luminous dial with applied ‘Arabic’ indices, a matching ‘pencil’ handset, an outer date track, an inner ‘railroad’ minute/seconds track, day and month windows, and a moonphase indicator. Beautifully proportioned, it’s a complete calendar that wouldn’t look out of place in a lineup with the best complicated watches of the mid-20th century.

Powering this stunner is the Vacheron Constantin Calibre 2460-1 automatic movement — beautifully decorated and adjusted to five positions, it’s a horological work of art that’s visible via the watch’s sapphire caseback. When paired with its navy blue alligator leather strap with a stainless steel, Maltese Cross-stylized deployant clasp, what we have is an offering that you’ll want to wear every day of the year.

Don’t let it slip through your fingers!

Overall Condition

The case is in fantastic condition overall showing light signs of wear from gentle use. Sunburst navy blue dial with applied 'Arabic' and luminous 'baton' indices is in as-new condition with with matching handset. Signed crown. Sapphire exhibition caseback.

Brand Story

+
Few manufactures can claim a lineage as long or as rich as Vacheron Constantin. Established in 1755, the manufacture soon made a reputation for the elegance of its products, by making pocket watches with complicated movements and engine-turned dials. Even today, these are marks of a manufacturer’s expertise, due to the skill and precision involved in crafting them, so for Vacheron Constantin to have achieved this in the eighteenth century is quite an impressive feat.

This expertise carried them through the 19th century, earning gold medals at National Exhibitions and blazing trails in the area of anti-magnetic timepieces. The 20th century saw further achievements, such as the opening of its boutique on the Quai de L’Ile in Geneva, where it still resides today. Even through the Depression and the Second World War, when many watch companies were forced to band together with competitors or else face closure, the manufacture continued to thrive—as it does to this day.
