Why We Love it

Universal Genève spent the 1950s and '60s building one of the most impressive catalogs in Swiss watchmaking. By the following decade, the manufacture embraced a new design language—sleeker, more aerodynamic, and perfectly in step with the era's fascination with streamlined forms. Few watches capture that evolution better than the White Shadow.

Introduced in the late 1960s, the White Shadow was built around one of Universal Genève's greatest technical achievements: the ultra-thin automatic Microtor movement. Rather than using a conventional full-sized oscillating weight, the ingenious micro-rotor architecture allowed the movement to remain exceptionally slim without sacrificing the convenience of automatic winding. It was an engineering milestone that helped define an entire generation of elegant everyday watches.

This stainless steel example from the 1970s measures 35mm and pairs its softly sculpted tonneau-inspired case with a rich black dial accented by applied baton markers, slender hands, and a framed date aperture at three o'clock. The contrast between the dark dial and brushed steel case gives the watch a distinctly modern character, while the pale blue suede leather strap introduces an unexpected splash of color that complements the clean, minimalist aesthetic. Completing the style is a signed stainless steel pin buckle.

The White Shadow has long lived in the shadow of the Polerouter, but that has begun to change as collectors rediscover Universal Genève's remarkable depth. Combining innovative movement architecture with unmistakably 1970s design, it represents one of the manufacture's most compelling everyday watches. Elegant, technically significant, and increasingly difficult to find in such honest condition, the White Shadow is the sort of vintage piece that only grows more interesting with time.

Brand Story

+
Universal Genève was founded in 1894 by Numa-Emile Descombes and Ulysse Georges Perret, establishing itself early on as a manufacturer of high-quality in-house movements and one of the first Swiss firms to embrace the wristwatch as a serious horological platform.

A pivotal moment came in 1897 when Louis Eduoard Berthoud, a gifted designer of complicated movements, joined the company. Under his technical leadership, Universal Genève became one of the foremost innovators in chronograph development during the 20th century. The brand's celebrated Compur and Compax chronographs earned a devoted following among aviators, military personnel, and collectors, while the Royal Family of the Netherlands granted Universal Genève a royal charter to supply chronographs to the Dutch military.

Beyond its technical achievements, Universal Genève developed a reputation for creating some of the most elegant and influential watches of the mid-century era. From the purpose-built Polerouter—designed by a young Gérald Genta—to refined dress watches such as the Cabriolet and Golden Shadow, the brand combined mechanical innovation with a distinctive sense of style that continues to resonate with collectors today.

Following decades of dormancy, Universal Genève was officially relaunched in 2026 under the stewardship of Georges Kern and the House of Brands Group. The revival marks the return of one of Swiss watchmaking's most revered names, a manufacture whose historic contributions to chronographs, micro-rotor movements, and modern watch design have secured its place among the great maisons of horological history. Vintage Universal Genève watches remain highly sought after, celebrated by collectors, historians, and enthusiasts for their enduring craftsmanship, innovation, and timeless appeal.
