Why We Love it
–Universal Genève is a special brand, and one that most of us here at Analog:Shift and vintage enthusiasts alike feel very strongly about.
While its Polerouter is perhaps best known to collectors, the line of chronographs known as the 'Compax' is a close second in popularity — and for us, it ranks as one of the most desired models of vintage chronographs, full stop.
Ever since its debut in the 1940s, it has seen numerous iterations ranging from more complicated and elegant dress pieces to sporty racing chronographs housed in more substantial cases.
This model is perhaps one of the most collectible and rare in the world of vintage UG. In some respects, this is the equivalent of the Paul Newman Daytona, but far rarer. This is a prototype dial Compax. Single digit numbers of these are known to exist.
Perhaps the most defining attribute of this piece is its case. Notably, a case made by C.R. Spillman, a firm founded in Switzerland in 1884. Spillman made cases for Patek, Rolex, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, and others. Measuring a contemporary for its time 38mm in diameter, this watch was quite different from the 31-36mm sizing characteristic of chronos of the era.
Its rarity alone would be sufficient to make this cool, but it also has vintage charm dialed to 11. A stunning 38mm case remains perfectly sized in 2025; a multi tone dial with three registers on it capture the ethos of the Compax vibe; a blue 'feuille' handset, pump pushers, and best of all, extremely clean condition throughout. It doesn't get much better than this.
This watch is a Compax, one of the most notable chronos in history. In 1934, U.G. launched the Compur dual-register chronograph model at Basel. Two years later in 1936, it debuted two additional models: a dual-register 'Uni-Compax' with 45-minute and running seconds totalizers, and the triple-register Compax with 30-minute, 12-hour, and running seconds registers. The Compax has been viewed as one of the most important chronographs ever since.
Powered by a hand-wound,and stunning manually wound Calibre 386 movement and paired to a stainless steel multi-link bracelet, this striking watch is undoubtedly one of the most incredible watches we have had come through the office. Historically significant, outfitted with incredible detailing, and preserved in beautiful condition, this watch checks all the boxes to drive a vintage enthusiast mad. It won't last long so act quick.
Brand Story

Brand Story
+In the brand's earliest days, it established itself as a manufacturer of in-house movements of exceptional quality. Universal Genève was also among the first watch manufactures to specialize in wristwatches. In 1897, Louis Eduoard Berthoud — noted designer of complicated watch movements — joined the company. His involvement ensured Universal Genève's supremacy in the development of complicated watches in the 20th Century.
It was under Berthoud's leadership that the brand's reputation as a producer of chronographs was solidified. Chronographs, in particular — namely the Compur and the Compax lines — attracted the attention of watch aficionados, aviators, and militaries around the world. Even the Royal Family of the Netherlands issued a royal charter for Universal Genève to outfit the Dutch military with its chronographs.
Universal Genève was also once responsible for some of the most beautiful dress and time-only watches of the mid-20th century. From the purpose-driven Polerouter to the ornate Cabriolet, UG had a touch all its own and breathed incredible beauty and craftsmanship into every piece they produced. Although the brand is currently dormant, there is tremendous interest in collector circles for vintage models, and is regarded very highly by horological historians and design enthusiasts alike.
