Universal Genève Gent's Watch
Why We Love it
Why We Love it–
For centuries, a watch has been an indispensable component of a man’s wardrobe. When watches were carried in the pocket, a gold fob chain across the stomach was a subtle way to telegraph a man’s wealth and status, hinting at the (usually gold) watch that ticked sonorously away from a waistcoat pocket. And when watches migrated to the wrist, nothing said “elegance” more than a flash of gold beneath a suit cuff.
However, tastes have changed, and what was fashionable in our grandfathers’ day became stodgy, dated… old-fashioned.
Hence the rise of “luxury” sports watches, or dive watches (such as the Rolex Submariner) that never see the outside of a wetsuit.
But the tides of fashion are fickle, and collectors are beginning to see the value—once more—in elegant watches like this one by Universal Genève.
Universal Genève is best-known in today’s watch collector market for its sporty chronographs. However, the brand produced some of the most interesting—and beautiful—timepieces of the post-war period. Watches like this one, for instance, could be found in jewelry stores alongside the likes of dress watches made by Audemars Piguet or Patek Philippe.
In fact, watches made by Universal Genève were imported into the U.S. by the Henri Stern Watch Agency—the same entity that imported Patek Philippe.
From any angle, this watch is class personified. The 35mm pink gold case with its fancy lugs, sector dial, and feuille hands resonate with superlative craftsmanship and design. Like the pocket watches of days gone by, it’s a sign of distinction that can be appreciated by anyone.
