Why We Love it
–Universal Genève built its reputation on innovation, elegance, and a willingness to experiment with form. While the manufacture is often celebrated for icons such as the Compax and Polerouter, some of its most intriguing creations came in the realm of dress watches, where designers were free to explore shape, proportion, and light in ways that still feel remarkably modern today.
This 1960s Universal Genève Faceted Star Crystal is a perfect example. Crafted in 14k yellow gold, the watch centers around a dramatic faceted crystal that transforms the entire dial experience. Rather than serving as a simple protective cover, the crystal acts as an architectural element, creating shifting reflections and geometric distortions that change with every movement of the wrist. The effect is subtle at first glance but endlessly captivating upon closer inspection.
Beneath the sculptural crystal lies a clean silver dial fitted with slender applied markers and minimalist hands. The restrained dial design allows the crystal and case architecture to take center stage, resulting in a watch that feels more like modernist jewelry than a traditional timekeeper. Measuring approximately 28mm, the square case wears with the confidence and elegance characteristic of the era's most sophisticated dress watches.
Powering the watch is a manually wound mechanical movement, a fitting choice for a timepiece whose appeal lies in its purity and simplicity. The watch is paired with a white top-stitched Saffiano leather strap secured by a gold-tone pin buckle, a combination that complements the warm tone of the case while enhancing its distinctly mid-century aesthetic.
Equal parts watch, sculpture, and optical experiment, it serves as a reminder that some of the most compelling vintage watches are not necessarily the most complicated, but the ones willing to see familiar objects from an entirely different angle.
Brand Story

Brand Story
+A pivotal moment came in 1897 when Louis Eduoard Berthoud, a gifted designer of complicated movements, joined the company. Under his technical leadership, Universal Genève became one of the foremost innovators in chronograph development during the 20th century. The brand's celebrated Compur and Compax chronographs earned a devoted following among aviators, military personnel, and collectors, while the Royal Family of the Netherlands granted Universal Genève a royal charter to supply chronographs to the Dutch military.
Beyond its technical achievements, Universal Genève developed a reputation for creating some of the most elegant and influential watches of the mid-century era. From the purpose-built Polerouter—designed by a young Gérald Genta—to refined dress watches such as the Cabriolet and Golden Shadow, the brand combined mechanical innovation with a distinctive sense of style that continues to resonate with collectors today.
Following decades of dormancy, Universal Genève was officially relaunched in 2026 under the stewardship of Georges Kern and the House of Brands Group. The revival marks the return of one of Swiss watchmaking's most revered names, a manufacture whose historic contributions to chronographs, micro-rotor movements, and modern watch design have secured its place among the great maisons of horological history. Vintage Universal Genève watches remain highly sought after, celebrated by collectors, historians, and enthusiasts for their enduring craftsmanship, innovation, and timeless appeal.
