Why We Love it

Universal Genève is a very special brand—one that we at Analog:Shift, along with vintage enthusiasts worldwide, feel incredibly strongly about.

While the Polerouter is arguably their most recognizable model, the chronographs known collectively as the Compax run a very close second. For us, they rank among the most desirable vintage chronographs ever produced, full stop.

Since its debut in the 1940s, the Compax line has taken on numerous forms, ranging from elegant, complicated dress chronographs to proper sporty racing timers housed in more substantial cases.

This particular Compax represents the collection at its best. Housed in an oversized 35mm chrome-plated brass case with sharp lines and drilled lugs that emphasize its sporting intentions, it features beautiful and uncommon black 'Breguet' numerals, balanced twin registers for running seconds and chronograph minutes, and a lovely blued 'leaf‑style' handset showing just the slightest hint of age.

Surrounding it all is a multi‑color, stacked scale configuration capable of measuring both speed and distance—an intricate yet wonderfully legible display that captures everything that makes these early Universal Genève chronographs so compelling.

Engaging with the manually wound Cal. 285 through its oversized crown is an experience in itself. And if that doesn’t win you over, the satisfying, tactile click of the rectangular pushers certainly will, sending the slender blued chronograph hand sweeping across the dial.

This example embodies everything we love about the Compax line: thoughtful design, historical importance, mechanical charm, and an aesthetic that remains as captivating today as it was the day it was made. Its well‑preserved case and warmly patinated dial only deepen the appeal, serving as a quiet testament to the decades it has lived.

Strap it on your wrist and you’ll immediately understand why collectors are always hunting for exceptional Compaxes like this one.

We are massive fans and are delighted to offer this one here.

Brand Story

+
Universal Genève was founded in 1894 by Numa-Emile Descombes and Ulysse George Perret.

In the brand's earliest days, it established itself as a manufacturer of in-house movements of exceptional quality. Universal Genève was also among the first watch manufactures to specialize in wristwatches. In 1897, Louis Eduoard Berthoud — noted designer of complicated watch movements — joined the company. His involvement ensured Universal Genève's supremacy in the development of complicated watches in the 20th Century.

It was under Berthoud's leadership that the brand's reputation as a producer of chronographs was solidified. Chronographs, in particular — namely the Compur and the Compax lines — attracted the attention of watch aficionados, aviators, and militaries around the world. Even the Royal Family of the Netherlands issued a royal charter for Universal Genève to outfit the Dutch military with its chronographs.

Universal Genève was also once responsible for some of the most beautiful dress and time-only watches of the mid-20th century. From the purpose-driven Polerouter to the ornate Cabriolet, UG had a touch all its own and breathed incredible beauty and craftsmanship into every piece they produced.

Although the brand is currently dormant, there is tremendous interest in collector circles for vintage models, and is regarded very highly by horological historians and design enthusiasts alike.
