Why We Love it

–

There was a period when Universal Genève could stand comfortably alongside some of Switzerland’s finest manufactures, producing watches that combined elegant design with genuinely innovative mechanics. This wonderfully restrained “Calatrava”-style dress watch is a particularly good example.

The Calatrava nickname here is descriptive rather than an official Universal Genève designation, referring to the classic round case, slim bezel, and clean dress-watch proportions. Here, the 14K gold case frames a warm champagne dial with applied gold Arabic numerals and markers. A framed date aperture at 3 o’clock adds everyday practicality, while slender gold hands and a central seconds hand keep the overall design beautifully simple. The combination has all the hallmarks of a great mid-century dress watch, without feeling overly formal.

But the more interesting story is happening inside. During the 1950s and 1960s, Universal Genève became one of the pioneers of the micro-rotor automatic movement, developing an ingenious system that integrated a small winding rotor into the movement rather than placing a full-sized rotor above it. The architecture allowed an automatic watch to remain exceptionally thin, an important technical achievement at a time when manufacturers were competing to create increasingly elegant self-winding watches.

That engineering makes watches like this much more than attractive vintage dress pieces. Universal Genève was simultaneously pursuing sophisticated chronographs, complicated watches, and some of the thinnest automatic movements of the era, establishing a technical reputation that has made its vintage catalog increasingly compelling to collectors.

This example pairs its 14K gold case and champagne dial with a brown lizard-leather strap and a gold pin buckle. This combination suits its understated mid-century character particularly well.

Elegant from the front and technically interesting beneath the surface, this Universal Genève represents the brand at its best: sophisticated design paired with clever watchmaking that was genuinely ahead of its time.

Brand Story

+
Universal Genève was founded in 1894 by Numa-Emile Descombes and Ulysse Georges Perret, establishing itself early on as a manufacturer of high-quality in-house movements and one of the first Swiss firms to embrace the wristwatch as a serious horological platform.

A pivotal moment came in 1897 when Louis Eduoard Berthoud, a gifted designer of complicated movements, joined the company. Under his technical leadership, Universal Genève became one of the foremost innovators in chronograph development during the 20th century. The brand's celebrated Compur and Compax chronographs earned a devoted following among aviators, military personnel, and collectors, while the Royal Family of the Netherlands granted Universal Genève a royal charter to supply chronographs to the Dutch military.

Beyond its technical achievements, Universal Genève developed a reputation for creating some of the most elegant and influential watches of the mid-century era. From the purpose-built Polerouter—designed by a young Gérald Genta—to refined dress watches such as the Cabriolet and Golden Shadow, the brand combined mechanical innovation with a distinctive sense of style that continues to resonate with collectors today.

Following decades of dormancy, Universal Genève was officially relaunched in 2026 under the stewardship of Georges Kern and the House of Brands Group. The revival marks the return of one of Swiss watchmaking's most revered names, a manufacture whose historic contributions to chronographs, micro-rotor movements, and modern watch design have secured its place among the great maisons of horological history. Vintage Universal Genève watches remain highly sought after, celebrated by collectors, historians, and enthusiasts for their enduring craftsmanship, innovation, and timeless appeal.
