Why We Love it
–Tudor’s legacy as maker of high-quality tool watches was cemented long before the brand re-entered the American market in late 2013.
This watch proves it! Dating to the 1980s, this second series Tudor Ranger Ref 90220 is easily mistaken for a Rolex 1016, but it's quite a bit rarer. Despite its smaller case size at 34mm, it wears incredibly well and comparable to a Rolex 1016 on the wrist. The dial features large, Arabic indices at the cardinal positions, the classic Tudor shield logo, "Oyster Prince" printed in Sans Serif and as two words, as opposed to the hyphenated word mark seen in previous references, white-accented "Ranger" text that resembles later examples of the Ref 9050, a matching 'shovel' handset and a 'candy bar' seconds hand.
Fitted with a classic explorer dial the Ranger is known for, this particular piece features a beautiful pumpkin tone patina on the indices and the dial overall, is as clean as they come. Equipped with an Oyster bracelet with very little stretch and a signed Tudor clasp, this piece also comes with service paperwork from RSC confirming its authenticity.
These watches are exceptionally rare and difficult to find in honest, authentic examples. So much so that we've been able to offer only a handful of Tudor Rangers in all of our years selling vintage watches!
Finding a watch of this integrity is a tall order, and we are incredibly proud to offer it for sale. It's watches like these that serve as the inspiration for the modern Tudor brand's recent pieces, including the Ranger of today.

Brand Story

Brand Story
+In creating Tudor, Wilsdorf wanted to offer “a watch that our agents could sell at a more modest price than our Rolex watches, and yet one that would attain the standards of dependability for which Rolex is famous.”
Tudors were in many ways Rolexes in all but name, with the same waterproof Oyster cases and similar styling. However, in order to keep costs down, the brand used off-the-shelf Swiss movements rather than their own in-house calibres. What resulted were watches that were more affordable than Rolexes to the consumer, but still uniformly tough and reliable.
Today Tudor has certainly defeated any impression of being the redheaded stepchild of the Rolex family, and their current timepiece collection — as well as their vintage counterparts — are getting the recognition and respect they most rightfully deserve. From the colorful “Home Plate” chronograph to the complicated Advisor, these models often picked up where Rolex left off, daring to be more bold and playful in their design. And now that the brand has introduced in-house movements while still managing to keep pricing modest, the company is better poised than ever to win the hearts and minds of millions of new watch enthusiasts.
