Why We Love it
–Tudor’s legacy as maker of high-quality tool watches was cemented long before the brand re-entered the American market in late 2013.
However, the manufacturer’s decision to tap its heritage when designing its newer products has gone a long way toward creating fresh Tudor devotees and frankly, a darling amongst the enthusiast community. Whether it’s the Heritage Chrono inspired by the 1970s ‘Monte Carlo’ chronograph, or more modern examples such as the Black Bay 54, Tudor FXD and Pelagos 39, Tudor’s modern lineup is a love letter to the best vintage timepieces.
After the modern 41mm Tudor Ranger was discontinued in 2020, many speculated that a smaller version was in the works — and indeed it was. Tudor announced the 39mm Tudor Ranger just a few years later, bolstering their ever-growing collection of sub-40mm stainless steel sports watches.
This example, a Reference 79950, features a satin-brushed steel case, a domed sapphire crystal, and a ‘rose’-signed screw-down crown. Considering its 47mm lug to lug and 12mm case thickness, this piece wears beautifully on the wrist — it's not unwieldy like its 41mm sibling — but as a modern day sports watch should, with balance and just enough presence.
The dial features all the hallmarks of the contemporary Ranger — printed baton indices, Arabic quadrant numerals, a ‘snakehead’ hour hand and a red-tipped running seconds hand. Paired to a Forstner Model O, Oyster-style bracelet with a push-button deployant clasp, this piece is powered by Tudor’s self-winding Calibre MT5402 — the same movement found in the ubiquitous Black Bay 58.
As far as we're concerned, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better everyday tool watch on the market right now.

Brand Story

Brand Story
+In creating Tudor, Wilsdorf wanted to offer “a watch that our agents could sell at a more modest price than our Rolex watches, and yet one that would attain the standards of dependability for which Rolex is famous.”
Tudors were in many ways Rolexes in all but name, with the same waterproof Oyster cases and similar styling. However, in order to keep costs down, the brand used off-the-shelf Swiss movements rather than their own in-house calibres. What resulted were watches that were more affordable than Rolexes to the consumer, but still uniformly tough and reliable.
Today Tudor has certainly defeated any impression of being the redheaded stepchild of the Rolex family, and their current timepiece collection — as well as their vintage counterparts — are getting the recognition and respect they most rightfully deserve. From the colorful “Home Plate” chronograph to the complicated Advisor, these models often picked up where Rolex left off, daring to be more bold and playful in their design. And now that the brand has introduced in-house movements while still managing to keep pricing modest, the company is better poised than ever to win the hearts and minds of millions of new watch enthusiasts.
