Why We Love it

It is difficult to get more iconic than the Rolex Submariner.  Borne in an era of global reimagining, the Submariner has come to represent the ethos of the post-war world that shifted its collective focus from destruction to exploration, discovery and innovation.

But despite the hype and legend, the Rolex Submariner was, since its inception, a stripped-down tool watch, designed with one mission in mind. The clean, matte black dial and symmetrical hour plots was the hallmark of sub-aquatic, form-meets-function design. For decades, the Submariner was not a collectible Rolex; it was seen as a hardy watch chosen by those who needed something that could take a beating. And it did.

The Rolex Submariner is an undeniable classic, and there’s good reason why almost every collector winds up with a one in their stash eventually- these are timeless, tough, do-anything, go-anywhere tool watches.

This particular Meters First (referring to the sequence of depth rating print, indicating a European market timepiece) Reference 5513 dates to roughly 1966, and is in excellent condition throughout, age, obviously having been well cared for by its previous owners. The luminous material on the dial and hands have developed a beautiful even patination, giving it that perfect vintage look that we all love. Its case is nice and fat, showing light signs of wear, but is devoid of any signs of over-polishing, and its bevels are still crisply defined. Fitted with a jet black bezel insert and a replacement domed acrylic crystal, this example checks all the boxes for a ready-to-wear Sub.

The 5513 has become incredibly popular over the last couple years, and excellent examples such as this one have become frustratingly difficult to come by.  Striking a balance of originality and patina, this example is a no-excuses Submariner that will please first-time vintage Rolex buyers and seasoned collectors alike.  Don't miss it!
