Why We Love it

Why We Love It

Launched in 1953, the Submariner line is one of - if not the single most important timepiece designs in all of wristwatch history.

An icon among icons, its signature Oyster case, rotating dive-timing bezel and simple three-hand black dial configuration with perfect proportions is for many the singular most identifiable wristwatch in the world.

What makes this particular 'Bart Simpson' Submariner special is the beautiful gilt dial which has aged so uniquely, along with the luminous indices and hands. It's referred to as the "Bart Simpson" because the coronet resembles the shape of Bart Simpson's hair, ultimately making this piece highly desirable to collectors. You can read about it more in the article here from our friends over at Hodinkee.

This example was brought to us out of long time sock-drawer storage from a single family owner in Maine several months ago. We treated it to a full mechanical spa treatment, replacement crystal, and had the bracelet restored, but the dial, hands and bezel remain in preserved untouched condition. This is a new to market example that hasn't made the rounds.

While 'Bart Simpson' Subs often feature patina that isn't universally pleasing, we find this piece to be absolutely lovely, don't you agree?

The Story

Produced from 1962 until 1989, the Reference 5513 is probably the longest-running model of Rolex ever. Following on the heels of the 5512, the 5513 was the second reference of Sub to feature crown guards. However, due to the 5512’s relative rarity on the collector’s circuit, it’s the 5513 that has come to typify vintage no-date Subs in the minds of collectors.

Long viewed by collectors as the purist expression of Submariner, the 5513 is the last great no-date Sub. Although Rolex still makes Submariners without dates, the 5513 retains the smaller diameter (39mm) and slimmer proportions that distinguish vintage Submariners from modern.

The dial underwent subtle changes throughout the model’s run, from gilt gloss dials in its very early years, to the matte “meters first” dial that many collectors associate with the model.
