Why We Love it

Among the vast sea of vintage dive watches, the Rolex Submariner stands out as a beacon of reliability. In continuous production for over sixty years, it’s seen wrist time with divers—both professional and military—and James Bond himself. Each model has its own devotees, from the Big Crown models worn by 007 to the date models introduced in the late 1960s.

But there are certain models that are remarkable for their continuity, and have earned a place in the hearts of many collectors.

The Reference 5513 is one of them.

Produced from 1962 until 1989, the Reference 5513 is probably the longest-running model of Rolex ever. Following on the heels of the 5512, the 5513 was the second reference of Sub to feature crown guards. However, due to the 5512’s relative rarity on the collector’s circuit, it’s the 5513 that has come to typify vintage no-date Subs in the minds of collectors.

The dial underwent subtle changes throughout the model’s run, from gilt gloss dials in its very early years, to the matte “meters first” dial that many collectors associate with the model.

What we offer here, however, is a serif dial. Following the meters first dials, Rolex transitioned to what collectors refer to as serif dials. 5513 Matte Dial gives a comprehensive breakdown of each dial type, but simply put, the term serif refers to the sharp pointed edges on the hour markers at 3, 6, and 9 and o’clock, giving it a look that’s similar to the serifs found on a font like Times New Roman.

Our 5513 dates from 1971. With honest signs of use and wear, including patina to the luminescent hour markers, it’s a survivor. For those collectors who want a vintage Sub that’s collectible but also wearable, this 5513 is hard to beat.
