Why We Love it
–The notion of a two-tone sports watch can seem somewhat incongruous—particularly when it’s a Rolex.
Think of it: a Rolex has been worn in some of the most forbidding environments imaginable. A Rolex has crossed the English Channel, scaled Mt. Everest, and descended to the bottom of the Marianas Trench. Astronauts and elite divers alike have worn Rolexes in some of the most forbidding environments imaginable—like the Moon.
But Rolex has taken their trademark Oyster case and cast it in precious metals, mainly for the Datejust or Turn-O-Graph, since the 1930s—perhaps to the bewilderment of purists who think that a Rolex (let alone any sports watch) should only be cold, hard steel.
Not only that, but Rolex has been making GMT Masters in Rolesor since the 1960s as well.
The Reference 1675 is judged by many collectors to be the epitome of the model, the absolute be-all and end-all of GMT Masters that puts all others to shame. With pointed crown guards and a souped-up chronometer grade movement, the 1675 has been a favorite of pilots and astronauts since its introduction. It is a classic, and with many classics, it seems like a shame to tamper with it… and yet there’s the Reference 16753, the watch we feature here.
The 16753 is distinguished by its two-tone steel and yellow gold case, gilt accents on the bezel, handset and crown. Another distinguishing feature is the pointed shape of the hour plots, which has given rise to the nickname “nipple” due to their similarity to… well, you know. The touches of gold on the Reference 16753 elevate it to a sphere of casual luxury that won't make it look out-of-place when worn with a suit.
This particular 16753, dating from the late 1970s, is an absolute delight. The lume on the hour plots and hands is, for lack of a better word, luscious, and the case is superb with sharp chamfers. Sophisticated yet sporty, the it’s the perfect compromise between casual and formal, at home on leather or on a nylon strap—with gold hardware, naturally.
