1967 Rolex Daytona 'Timing 3-Minute Eggs'

Rolex’s advertising campaigns from the late 1960s and early 1970s have to be among the best ever conceived. This one in particular simply oozes charm and utilitarian, sporty confidence: The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona affixed to the wrist of a driver, leather driving gloves, analog gauges, and open road in full view. The headline makes clear that this is no commonplace, everyday watch — though it’s fully capable of such mundane timing tasks — but rather, a serious tool meant for the professional driver.

The choppy, matter-of-fact copywriting in the lower corner would be enough to make Hemingway proud, detailing the watch in question without a single extraneous word. Regardless of how you use your Rolex Daytona — or indeed, whether or not you even own one! — this is the type of midcentury ephemera that gets watch collectors excited, and will surely do the same for you. (Bonus points if you hang it in your garage above a beautiful sports car!)

When this ad was freshly printed in 1967 — and for many subsequent years — the Daytona was more of a“tool watch” than a collectible timepiece. No one would have noticed (or cared) that the exact watch featured in this ad is not a typical Daytona configuration. Of course today, enthusiasts won’t miss the interesting assembly pictured, which is a reference 6239 dial installed in a pre-Daytona reference 6238 case. This is an unusual iteration, but known to be correct.

Daytona advertisements themselves are fairly uncommon. Only a handful of full-page ads showing the watch by itself have been discovered, and this 1967 beauty may be the best of them.
