Why We Love it
–As fans of the well-aged, we like our watches to have a little patina. Sometimes, we like them to have a lot. There is such a thing as too much - but this ain't it!
Patina tells the story of a timepiece in certain terms, but far too often overzealous collectors, dealers, or watchmakers remove that story by replacing or refinishing parts to make them look "new". Why anyone would want a twenty or thirty (or more!) year old watch to look new is beyond us, particularly when the aging effects add so much to the overall appearance of a timepiece.
While patina can come in many forms and from many sources- sun, moisture, tool marks, dirt - finding an even patination that is aesthetically pleasing is admittedly challenging. Needless to say, when we got a look at this brilliant Reference 1603 Datejust, it was love at first sight!
With an incredible sun-faded blue dial, this particular Datejust dates from approximately 1967 and features the classic 36mm Oyster case and machine-turned steel bezel. Its case shows signs of wear and use without being totally beat to shit, and all of the original luminous plots are still intact! Topping it off are the original alpha hands, which add a tremendous amount of character to an already captivating timepiece. It is quite clear that this beauty spent a lot of time in the sun in the past four decades - why not strap it on and add your own chapter to its story?
