Why We Love it
Why We Love it–
Here at analog/shift, we have a passion for timepieces with tradition, style and value. And it's no surprise that the Pantheon of Rolex watches includes so many pieces truly worthy of the moniker "icon."
When you think of Rolex, your first thoughts may be the unmistakable GMT Master with its two-tone "Pepsi" bezel, the aviator's timepiece designed for Pan-Am pilots and transatlantic jet flights. Or you might imagine the form-follows-function Explorer I, the watch designed for mountaineers and tested under the most extreme conditions on earth. Mostly likely, you'll think of the Submariner, the legendary diver by which all others are measured.
There's no denying that a Rolex Submariner is one of the most iconic watches of the last 60 years, but the same can easily be said about its sibling, the Datejust. Designed for the fluctuating conditions faced in everyday wear, the Datejust was the world's first wristwatch ever to incorporate a date function, and has been worn proudly by presidents, athletes and movie stars - and probably your grandfather. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again; with perfect proportions, a robust automatic movement and timeless styling, the Rolex Datejust may simply be the most versatile and wearable watch ever designed.
This particular Datejust (Reference 1601) dates from approximately 1972 and features a classic 36mm Oyster case, luminous silver sunburst dial and a perfect fluted white gold bezel. In gorgeous condition, this watch should be on the list for any collection, big or small.

Personal Note: The Rolex Datejust was the first vintage watch I owned. In fact, I still own it - a two-tone Rolex Datejust 'Turn-O-Graph' from 1969. What captivated me about the Datejust was its timelessness; one day while strolling through Central Park with one on my wrist, it dawned on me - any man from the last five decades could have experienced this same exact thing. The Park was bustling with life, the gigantic energy of the city buzzing around its perimeter and there on my wrist was the iconic Datejust, just as it all had been for generations before. Timeless beauty, unchanged greatness. I was hooked. - Jacob Sotak
