Why We Love it
–Roamer was founded in 1888 in the Swiss village of Solothurn. Like so many others, the brand churned out scores of solid, dependable mechanical watches during the 1900s (many using their own movements) until the Quartz Crisis of the 1970s forced it to close its doors. Some of its best-known lines included the Mustang and the Stingray, featured here.
The Stingray name was first applied to a line of divers released in 1967. It was born out of their older Rotopower range, which were powered by Roamer’s automatic Caliber MST436. These stocky, stalwart watches were released until 1973 and were Roamer’s very first watches specifically-designed for diving.
The Stingray S proved to be so successful that Roamer’s next step was to produce a chronograph in the same line.
Powered by the redoubtable Valjoux 72, favorite of brands from Universal Genéve to Heuer and even Rolex, the Stingray chronograph was first released in 1969. It shared the same cushion case design as the Stingray S dive watch.
The next year Roamer followed up the Stingray chronograph with two new versions, the Chrono-Diver and the Jet Timer, featured here, which was produced until 1975. Now powered by the Valjoux 23, the massive (44mm) cushion case is adorned by a rotating bezel, in the Jet Timer's case adorned with 12/24 hour markings. But the case of the Stingray’s is game-changing in that it precedes the what many would consider the ultimate cushion case chronograph --the Omega Speedmaster-- Mark II, by a year.
On its side, the case actually takes on the appearance of a stingray, giving it an aquatic flare that matches the name. With funky round chronography pushers and sharp pointed crown guards, this is a particularly memorable tool watch from the greatest era of diving chronographs.
If you're looking for something a little different with great vintage looks in a large, affordable package, this is your watch!
