Why We Love it
–Though the famous Calatrava is — for good reason — perhaps the best known of Patek Philippe’s incredible dress watches, there are myriad others that deserve recognition.
From the rectangular Gondolo to the curvaceous Golden Ellipse, these timepieces, though simple in design, beg a closer look for their classic proportions and strict attention to detail. Patek has been producing such wristwatches for roughly a century of its 180-plus years, and shows no signs of slowing down.
This particular piece dates to circa the mid 1960s and is loaded with some fantastic Art Deco design cues. It features a stunning 28mm 18k white gold faceted-square case with a recessed white gold signed crown, a lovely cross-hatched silver linen dial with applied 'pyramid' quadrant indices, and a matching 'pencil' handset.
Powered by the hand-wound Patek Philippe Calibre 23-300, it comes paired to a black crocodile leather strap with a matching signed white gold pin buckle.
Handsome, elegant and simple, it’s a fine example of Patek’s expertise in stylistic elegance and design prowess exercised in the mid 20th century.
Outstanding.
