Why We Love it

Not every timepiece from the world’s greatest watchmaker fits neatly into the mold of an overarching theme or collection.

While we love a simple Calatrava, a sporty Aquanaut, or a complicated perpetual calendar as much as the next guy, the oddball, more overlooked and usually limited-production, shaped watches made by the maison in the second half of the 20th century are often some of the most innovative and charming in Patek Philippe's oeuvre.

Take this fantastic piece for example. Aptly nicknamed the ‘UFO,’ this Reference 3580A features a 35mm stainless steel case with a radially finished bezel, a slightly domed crystal and an awesome Patek Philippe signed stainless steel mesh bracelet mounted to a set of hidden ‘T’ lugs.

The crown, you may ask?

Well it’s positioned on the caseback making this particular Reference the only stainless steel, back-wind configuration in the entire Patek catalog!

Like the Ellipses of the time, this piece is adorned with a stunning sunburst blue dial with a matching handset and applied ‘black line’ markers. At its core, this piece is powered by a self-winding Calibre 350 movement.

Steel Pateks are rare. Uncommon at the very least; and with a speculated 500 examples of this Reference ever having been produced, this piece is beautiful, scarce, and a unique piece of art — and there's no telling when one of these with a matching bracelet will surface again.

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.

Of course for a brand that is steeped in heritage, we are told “You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”

Well, you know the rest.
