Why We Love it

Patek Philippe is one of the few brands that knows how to execute simple perfection.

Over the years their dressy Calatrava line has evolved, but the look remains unmistakable and iconic, and its rich history provides the vintage enthusiast with a variety of choices in metals, sizes, and tiny details to obsess over.

This particular Calatrava, however, has a trick up its sleeve. A rare Reference 3418 Convertible, it can be worn one of two ways: either on its integrated, stainless steel mesh bracelet, or, by swapping out the bracelet for a pair of lugs — which we have included with the watch — with a conventional two-piece strap. Produced between 1958 and 1962 only in steel, the 3418 is the type of clever design that was popular in midcentury watchmaking, but that has all but disappeared today.

This particular Reference 3418 is housed in a 34mm stainless steel case with an acrylic crystal, a signed crown, and a polished bezel. It features a silver sunburst dial with applied baton indices, a matching ‘pencil’ handset, and a sub-seconds register at 6 o’clock. Powered by the Patek Philippe Calibre 12-400 manually wound movement, it comes paired to its steel mesh bracelet with a siged, belt-loop clasp, which can be swapped out for the (included) conventional lugs if desired.

Rare, fetching, and innovative, this particular Calatrava is a special find — even within an already-notable model family. Examples that still include their swappable lugs are tough to come by, so you know what we’re going to say:

Dont sleep on it!

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.

Of course for a brand that is steeped in heritage, we are told “You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”

Well, you know the rest.
